Right this moment, I'm watching Roger Waters' concert movie of The Wall from rwcent tours (I attended at Wembley Stadium).

This album has been a catharsis for me since teenage years- around 26 years. It is like a life long friend- helping me out of the blackness that descends from time to time...

+1 for La Dispute. A friend in college was really in to bands like Touche Amore, Pianos Become The Teeth etc etc.

I didn't really get his obsession until he showed me La Dispute's Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River...

This track in particular made me cry actual real tears. I could feel an overwhelming empathy and still to this day cannot make it through the song without getting a little tearful.

Jordan's vocal style is emotionally exhausting and about as far from refined as can be, and obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but I can dig how raw it is.

The OP sounded like he was looking for people that lose it, instead of these super-restrained things that keep getting posted!

The most emotionally intense album I've ever heard is Glassjaw's "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Silence."
Yup, that's the right direction. Love Glassjaw and love showing it to people and watch their face change as they go from "OK this sounds interesting" to "What the ...." to either love or hate.

This entire album is very moving, the vocal delivery and the lyrics are amazing.

Absolutely adore this album.

Skipped everything, Anathema - Weather Systems album. Holy ..... Got it right after a break up. The music is just so...good! I don't know. Feels good man. Let's tears flow. Feeds your soul.
Glorious band. One of the first things my wife and I found out we had in common was a love for Anathema.

The Elijah's record 'I Loved I Hated I Destroyed I Created' is super. Emotive music, great clean vocals and an ugly scream/shout that jars in the best way possible. The clean vocalist currently plays guitar for Being As An Ocean.

Check out this tune, 'I Loved'.

Devil Sold His Soul has some pretty powerful stuff especially their last EP.

Let's also not forget Converge's 'Jane Doe' - one ofbthe most cathartic records of all time.
Time by DSHS has made me cry more than once, including the last time I saw them live. That song just crushes me. The Elijah was a band I desperately wanted to love but their screaming vocalist always turned me off them. Everything else is so good though. I'll give them another go.

Every time I listen to Touché Amoré I feel like I'm listening to hardcore's version of pop punk. It's fun but for whatever reason they've never had staying power for me. I'm going to give a couple of their albums more spins though, since I already have them and they're short.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

I'm in uni at the moment so ill have a proper dig through this thread when I get back home, but I have a few quick suggestions. None are heavy, but all of them pack very serious, very dark and very emotional punches.

Giles Corey
Check out track one for some of the most harrowing music out there.

The link didn't imbed but it's the main one I wanted to share, definitely check this one out!

Scott Walker
Something a little less crushing, but none the less fantastic

John Cale
Something lighter still, but still worth perhaps listening to
