Finally got the wife playing BOTW and you can tell the last 3D video game was on the N64. Watching her battle with the camera and the 15 different buttons and abilities is really entertaining

so i just got the master sword, and i've got a "theory" that i'm pretty sure is spot on at this point, so big potential spoilers (seriously don't read this if you don't want something spoiled):

99.9999% sure that the Light Dragon is Zelda. they've kind of danced around it a little bit, but the dragon was previously not there in botw, even though the other 3 were. the master sword is embedded in its head, which is why the quest you get to retrieve the sword says something like "it's moving for some reason", all of the memories from Zelda are gained from Dragon's Tears and for fucks sake the dragon has blonde hair lol. another memory i've gotten also mentions "draconification" or something that would make the subject immortal but "lose themselves" in the process. my guess is that Zelda was sent back in time to the birth of hyrule, and there was no way for her to get back to the present, so they made her a dragon so she could sit around for i guess thousands/tens of thousands of years until the time of TOTK?

either way it's more story than most zelda games have. not confirmed but i'm actually fairly certain i'm correct or at least pretty damn close.

edit: also the damage value for the master sword just isn't listed in the menu? not sure why, but i only attacked a Soldier Construct I with it and it died in one hit which isn't a great litmus test for how much damage it does, but i suppose it's possible it's a one-hit-kill on everything/almost everything?

Nah I've checked probably about 20 of them and they all just had the same crappy rusted Knight's Swords and whatever as you find above. Probably some of them have royal weapons especially depending how far in the game you've progressed.
I got a Traveler's Spear with some sparkles on the end.

Also just found an
ancient blade
which has a fuse attack stat of 50! So that's going to make for a very good arrow some day.

Also, I noticed that you have to resort your item list when you fuse an arrowhead that you only have one of, but don't actually shoot. It goes back to your inventory, but at the very bottom like yiy just picked it up.

Also also, has anyone been back to the Shrine of Resurrection?

the traveler's spear with the sparkles in the name is what i was thinking of too, i guess i just assumed that meant it was unused? but it'd been a while and i hadn't really investigated further

and yeah i stopped by the shrine, and also stopped by the temple of time and tried praying to the statue to be told that "they're trapped behind a waterfall" or something, but i haven't really dug into that much yet either

really enjoying the fact that you can modularly build a house, though i do wish you could use more than 15 pieces... i'm only using 13 in this picture and it feels like there's way more room than i could possibly take up with them

either way though, it'll be cool to see what people end up building

I just did the lightning temple. I really liked it, and the boss was an actual challenge (partly cause I went in there with only about 7 hearts worth of healing). I liked it a LOT more than the wind temple, which I thought was way too similar to the bird divine beast.

Anyway, one thing I did NOT like is the way the lightning power triggers. You have to chase her around in melee range to talk to her to get her to use the ability. And you can have another spirit following you at the same time, it gets messy. I think they maybe should have done something more like the first game where most of the powers are very tied to different button combos. I’m constantly triggering the bird guy while I’m running around mass looting poes or whatever.

actually just made it down that way for the first time, started setting that quest in motion but all i've done at this point is the initial wave of enemies and the spawner and then got sent back to town.

nice to see gibdos in a Zelda game again, feels like it's been a really long time. in fact, i've actually been really happy overall with how much more enemy variety there is compared to botw's basically 3 enemy types.

also ran into one of the Depths bosses for the first time last night. diving through one of the chasms and just seeing movement in the darkness before i could see it properly made me skin crawl a little. was pretty cool

I started the chains for the last two temples (water and fire), not sure which I'll do first. I should probably try to get the sword back.

I've really not interacted with SKY WORLD much at all cause I really do not find flight intuitive at all at this point. I get it when you can make a glider and shoot it off a runway on some islands. I get it when things are low enough that a hot air balloon will reach them before the top decays and falls off (like happens when trying to get to MOST sky islands). I get it when things are close enough to a sky platform that you can just glide to them from there. But outside of that, I have no idea! Guess when I get a huge battery and learn how to make vehicles that don't have to be "launched" maybe I'll be in business.

I got to some horrible sky boss via gliding that wrecked me (a three headed dragon that would shoot three death beams of three different elements at me repeatedly so there was no way to block all three with any armor set I'm currently aware of).

I'm also starting to contemplate looking up where the heck to get the rest of the pieces of the climbing gear, the zora armor, and the rubber armor. I got the chests for two of them from some random NPC that put Xs on my map telling me where to go, but I haven't run into anyone else like that, so at this point I'm pretty far into the game and still have no concept of where the rest are other than hoping I luck out and find them like a needle in a haystack.

my best luck for getting to some of the sky islands is to use recall on pieces of ruins that fall from the sky and ride them up, but obviously that's not super helpful for choosing specific ones to go to.

also god yes, i found the climbing set chest piece within something like an hour or two of getting off the tutorial island, and haven't found either of the other pieces. i did manage to find all 3 pieces of the glide set which is pretty nice, but not as helpful as i was hoping it would be

I don't have ANY pieces of the glide set, I didn't know that was a thing. I have some other one-offs but I don't really even know what they do (one's labeled "cold weather attack," another is "hot weather attack," presumably they do nothing but buff your attack in certain weather conditions?). The one new one I have that's useful is a piece of the FROGGY armor but I think the rest is locked behind doing all those darn journalistic investigations with the bird guy.

I initially thought the point of that falling debris was to get you back up to sky land, but I've never found one that went high enough before the recall bar expires. Not sure if there's a way to lengthen that later like you can with batteries. Probably not?

I ended up finding the first challenge that gave a glide piece by chance when I was checking out some sky islands, and then ended up checking my map for similar islands and checking those out to find the full set. Like I said, not too crazy useful, it definitely lets you glide further and more freely than without, but I figured it was going to be a full-on wingsuit that'd let you rocket around, but alas no. Although I've heard from reddit that the set bonus eliminates fall damage entirely, so once I get that my first order of business is obviously going to be to rocket into the ground as fast as possible like Link has become a ballistic missle

And yeah the debris I've noticed can be iffy. I'll hop on it if I see it fall - and only if it's falling close. I've also noticed that sometimes it'd be just some random chunk that fell from apparently nowhere? But I've had a couple that'll bring you up to a tiny little floating island with a chest, including one I think had some secondary type of orb that mentions something to do with sages, but I've only gotten the one so far.

I love how with this game they took two of the biggest criticisms of BotW and kinda monkey's pawed them:

"Oh you're mad about the good weapons you found breaking too easily? No more good weapons."

"Oh you don't like climbing in the rain? Go find a cave."

idk, i have 6 weapons that do over 30 damage on me right now, but all things are temporary - incidentally literally just now found out you can fuse to the master sword. it didn't even occur to me to try. still doesn't state how much damage it does, though, just a "Master Sword + attachment" thing.

for the rain though there's the froggy suit and also sticky elixirs you can make to make slipping less likely. that said though, i've only gotten one piece of the froggy set so i have no idea if all 3 just make you immune to slipping or not. one piece lets you climb almost 3x as far before slipping though, doesn't seem to affect jumping while climbing though

The only other thing I've found so far that carries over is the photo from Champion's Ballad

Well, I discovered where you get "good" weapons. The minibosses I've killed (Talus, Construct) dropped some item that I couldn't seem to interact with. After a few kills I figured out you could fuse it, and they're often something like +25 damage to whatever weapon you fused it to.

And yeah most of the weapons in the depths held by the ghosts are not rusted. I guess I wasn't looking closely enough in the dark!

Anyway I have almost all the checkpoints in the depths and like 70 something shrines and 2 of the temples finished and now I need to take a break. I think the next thing to start chipping away at is that sidequest chain for the newspaper. That or grinding out the materials for armor upgrades. I feel like they're more ridiculous requirements this time around, but maybe not. Ex the climbing armor's third upgrade needs 24 frozen keese wings, and me at 50 hours have ZERO and when I go looking for them I tend to find like 3 of them and the drop rate of the wings is like 1/3. So yeah, going to be a while.

The only armor I can upgrade to third level is that glow armor and that's kinda useless after you've explored most of the depths. I guess the extra armor rating would make it situationally better until I upgrade better sets! I have the set bonuses unlocked on the glow armor, flame armor, snowquill armor, rubber armor, and climbing armor and am almost there with the glide armor and stealth armor. I dunno if any of the other sets are really worth it. I never liked the barbarian set in the last game cause the materials were ridiculous and its armor rating was bad. I only have one piece of it so far in this game.

I'm always amused by how you can cheese a lot of puzzles with recall. I was a big fan of the jenga one. I just yanked out a top piece to make the ball fall at me, hit it with recall before it could fall off the screen and reset the puzzle, and then brought it over to me. I'm not exactly sure how you're "supposed" to do it but I had to laugh at how it took about 15 seconds. I've done similar things with the korok traversal stuff. Ex I put them in the air and hold them there for a while with ultrahand, then quick run up to the top of the ledge and use recall on them and move them to the top when you weren't "supposed" to be able to just ultrahand them up there. The powers are so weird and potentially game-breaking compared to those in BOTW, I like it a lot.

I'm pretty far behind the rest of y'all - I only just finished the first / wind temple thingie. I haven't found any real trouble finding combinations of weapons that work well though. For as early as I am in the game, I'm carrying around weapons marked anywhere from 10 to 40.

Yeah I have powerful weapons too, my point was about BotW's strong weapons like Lynel swords or whatever.

The equivalent to those seems to be fusing the items that drop off bosses. I haven't fought a lynel yet, but the Flux Construct 2/3s and the Frost/Fire Taluses sure drop great items for fusing that boost any weapon way up into the 40+ damage area. The Gleeocks do, also, but theirs are lootable which makes me not want to fuse them cause they'll probably end up getting used in some stupid armor upgrade.

Yesterday I went around trying to find shrines and filling in maps and mostly farming for armor set upgrades, so now I have the main sets at full upgrade. Worst thing was those smotherwing butterflies until I found beedle sells them in two stables. I also fought two "King Gleeocks," a frost one and a lightning one. The first was an absolutely infuriating fight cause I think I was trying to get too close to him after the first ~20%, at which point he starts spamming a wing buffet thing that sends you flying back. So I was CONSTANTLY falling down and it was just maddening. Then his last phase is really scary and requires the use of recall and slow motion arrows, but it sure is cool when you pull it off. I then fought a Lightning Gleeock and had a MUCH easier time, either cause he didn't spam wing buffet or I was standing back too far so he didn't do it much. Plus I used a spear with a Flux Construct III part on it that did insane amounts of damage so itAttach files took like 2/3 as many knockdowns as on the first guy.

I also stopped fearing Phantom Ganons, because the master sword behaves like it did with the Blight Ganons and Guardians in the last game (it starts glowing and does massively increased damage). That guy drops OK weapons but half of them drain your health when you use them which isn't so great.

I have completed 92 shrines and probably unlocked another 10-20 that I haven't done yet, so I think I'm getting somewhere. My hearts still all fit on one row, though. I should do the other temples before I'm way too overpowered for them. Probably going to take a break for a couple days, I played way too much this weekend.

Idk about you guys, I'm at 30 hours or more.

I've spent a lot of time lately trying to build good boats, and it is not easy.
