What am I missing here? I've been playing 27 years and I have never seen anyone put the ball end of the string at the headstock that wasn't a headless guitar.View attachment 117747

The little ding where you can see the wood happened like a week after I got the most expensive guitar I would have for the next 10 years because I thought the case was latched. Second ding was when the screw for the straplocks pulled out and it bounced headstock first off stage. Knowing what I know now, I should have bought a lottery ticket because I dropped a Gibson off stage onto it's headstock and dinged the headstock.
Those 2 moments took it from OMG this guitar is so expensive, to this guitar cost me a lot of money, and I'm gonna get my money's worth out of it.

Many years ago I bought a Taylor acoustic and took it home for Christmas to show my dad. He picked it up and played it for a little while. Later on I realized he had given it the most severe case of belt buckle rash. I didn't have the heart to tell him. Now I think it's kind of cool. Always reminds me of him when I play that guitar.

Oh lol it's a double locking trem so I string the ball end through the tuning peg, clamp the plain end in the bridge after cutting to length, then tune up.

@Matt08642 said it all, I do this as well and lost count for how long. It's pretty straight forward and the smart thing to do with double locking guitar systems. There are no string excesses at the headstock, which means no piercing anything with the strings' unwound excess, be it an eyeball, finger, hand, face, vocalist, bass player, groupies, whatever... it's the smart thing to do, this is the way...

I figured that was the case just curious if there is some benefit by doing it that way?

It's a faster stringing procedure for double locking floating systems like most Ibanez Edge. One gets a clean headstock without pointy string ends that may pierce something... like eyeballs when too long...

I put an idiot mark on one of the new Mitchells today. Gonna put it up on the ‘verb for $1,200 as a rare heavy relic by an experienced Luthor.
I was just taught to do it this way as a quality of life thing. Less snipping stuff, less garbage, fun conversation starter

I always have done that on guitars with a Floyd or Edge. Why not? I will generally leave enough extra at the peg that there is some more string to pull down if you break it at the bridge locking block, amd the ball keeps it from drawing blood when you or your roommates graze the headstock with flesh.

My jackson was all chiped and it was fine.
One of my second hand mm JP6 finish exploded (from neck pocket to all the body) and it was terrible, chunks of paint and poly finish falling...Sold it.
But my first brand new guitar, my jp12, the first dings in the basswood, that is soft like ass, IT JUST DINGS IF YOU HIT IT WITH A FEATHER...Man the first ones hurt !
At least it has no crack or chip.

I used to do it until I started putting locking tuners on the trem guitars I use most.
