I feel like I've seen this in joke form many ways. Usually to make fun of the drummer, though...

"What do you call a person that hangs out w 2 musicians all day?"

I've never outwardly looked like a metalhead, so I know most are surprised when I generally play tech metal and other noodly guitar shit. And then those who know I play metal are also surprised I can play some jazz chord-melodies and know a couple difficult classical pieces. I'm a pretty hip-lookin dude so I guess the tappy, open-tuning math rock I also write is not really a surprise.

The worst is when boomers ask me to play shit like Hotel California or some blues, which I hate, and don't know how to play anyway.

That's always a confidence killing moment...

"I've played guitar for 23 years..."

    "Can you play Freedbird?"

    *sigh*

I do have a goofy chord-melody arrangement of Smoke on the Water to throw down when i need to though.

You get to appease them with lame riffs they love (although I do love Deep Purple and Richie Blackmore), while simultaneously asserting your guitar prowess.

I guess that's one downside of trying to actively avoid getting into what kind of music you play, people will instead just substitute their own expectations.

    Me: "I Play Guitar."
Them: "Cool, so you can play literally every popular guitar song from the past 50 years from memory, right?"
Me: /kills self by stabbing brain through eye socket with sharpened whammy bar

You could always start with that tritone intro from Purple Haze, and then go into some diminished death metal riffage lol

I don't advertise it but I answer the "What do you do for fun" question with "Guitar". Never called myself a musician though.

However, I stopped attempting to explain I like metal with screaming vocals that isn't literally Screamo when I got laughed at for saying that I prefer different metal genres. I never knew people didn't realize that music had genres.

No one really guesses I’m a musician. I tend to try steer conversations with new people towards music though, in hopes of finding out if they’re a fellow metalhead or guitar player.

One thing i have noticed is the more cheery and happy you are the less people think you’re into death metal. I think I’m a generally smiley person and definitely don’t dress like a metal head so it catches some people by surprise.

Them: what kind of music does your band play?
    Me: metal
Them: Oh I like metal. You know, bands like Korn, Disturbed, Alice in Chains
    Me: *sigh*

Usually they also like Metallica which is the only "metal" band, of course, the most popular metal band.

Me: no we play blackened melodeath
Them: *mimics all of death metal screaming* AGGGHHHH. KILL EVERYBODYYYYY. I WORSHIP THE DEVILLLLL...FUCK YOUR MOOOOOM. AAAAAGGHHHHH!!!! "hahahahah what are you Charles Mansons brother or something?
    Me: *already walking away*

Can you recommend a "good" album like that?

I once played a bunch of Slayer riffs in my classroom; to which most of my students’ jaws dropped. What dropped my jaw was when one of them (a 10-year old girl) named every.single.riff.

Favorite student of all time. She and I talked metal for the rest of the year. One of my kids this year requested Hammer Smashed Face. I happily obliged.

I agree with most of the sentiments in this thread though. I don’t look like the type of guy that would play what I play. Usually it’s best to say “yep, I like Metallica.”

Like what exactly? I dont know what you mean. A good blackened melodeath album?

Thats kind of a title I give us though it certainly is a "thing" already I believe. We also have some tech elements and we are quite new so still finding our sound yet.

People usually guess I play drums. I'm assuming it's the way my knuckles drag on the ground or perhaps my unibrow. Could also be my poor hygiene.

I once heard someone describe the average music-illiterate/idiot's impression of how playing music works as being the same as how drawing works. Like, they think "hey, play Freebird/Hotel California" is the same as "hey, draw a picture of a football." You play the guitar, you can make the pretty sounds!

The bit that bothers me is when you get that kind of treatment from other musicians- like in a store.
Go and pick up a guitar and get "heh, betcha aren't gonna play folk with that eh?"
Sure. I will play ONLY THE HEAVIEST OF TRVE METAL because the guitar is painted black. Black guitars can only play metal.

This is my dream for my son, currently 7 years old.

His favourite band at the moment is Slugdge, before that he liked "that drumming one", i.e. Meshuggah.

I spend 90% of my time in scrubs or gym clothes, so most people don't expect me to be into metal, let alone the more extreme end of that spectrum. I rarely wear band shirts unless I'm hanging out around my house. I'm a relatively quiet guy irl so I never bring up the fact that I play guitar unless someone else is talking about guitars/metal. I do get the occasional racial stereotyping where they think just because I'm part asian that I play the piano or violin. Nobody suspects that I play guitar, let alone the kind of schizophrenic melting pot of genres I play

He has exquisite taste for a 7 year old.

That's one of my favorite things to do in guitar center. Play super mellow blues/jazzy stuff on "metal" guitars and then turn around and play nasty ass death metal riffage with semihollows or other boomer approved guitars
