Now I'm sure some of you guys play metal and have the hard to read T-shirts to prove it, but I was wondering what people tend to assume when you tell them that you're a musician.

I play a LOT of stuff:
    1. Rock
    2. Metal (melodic and sometimes nu-ish)
    3. Hip Hop / R&B
    4. My own experimental weirdness

I play guitar, bass and saxophone most of the time.

What I noticed, though, is that when I tell people that I'm a musician, they like to guess what I play and I've been noticing some patterns, so I was curious what other's experience is with that.

This kind of reminds me of the reverse of a situation in college where we were walking around campus and the other dude in my band had his acoustic with him and he was plucking it as we walked along... This lady goes, "Oh a guitar! What do you play?"

He politely said, "Guitar..." and walked away.

The first thing every single person assumes when I say that I am a musician is that I'm a singer. Singing might be the part of music I like doing least next to playing drums.

That said, I frequently get told that I "look like a singer". I tell them that I play saxophone to avoid singing. They keys are my autotune...

What about you? Are people usually spot on or do you get some interesting guesses?

Oh you play guitar? Acoustic or electric?

    Or alternatively

Oh, you play guitar? Me, too!
Cool! Yeah I'm kind of a guitar nerd. What kind of guitar do you have?
    Acoustic.

Didn’t want to just repeat this, lol.

Well-meaning older guys always ask me whether it’s a Gibson or Fender to try to bond. I normally just say fender as it’s closer to the truth.

I don’t want to come out as a 7-string neckthrough stainless steel fret floating trem fan to a guy who 50/50 is going to say that tuning low is “bad for the guitar”.

    Dad-Rock privilege is real.

I'm pretty much always wearing and indecipherable or mildly inappropriate metal band t-shirt, so people usually ask something like "Oh a musician? You play that screamin' shit?"

I don't easily say to people I'm a musician... it mostly happens when I'm introduced to someone by a common friend, but that's it.

Legit a conversation I had a few years ago:
Me: *Plays Miserlou in a park near my college*
random girl: "Oh isn't that a Black eyed peas song?"
Me: "Uh... no, it's Dick Dale and was originally based off a Lebanese tune he heard as a kid"
random: "No I'm pretty sure that's Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas"
Me: "They sampled it for Pump It, but it's originally by Dick Dale..."
random: "Is Dick Dale some Dj or something?"

She was trying to say, "I think you're cute and I like dudes that play guitar..."

    You, sir, fucked up.

It's like when I was in an airport I was forced to sleep in several years ago... I woke up at 4am to some girl saying "Do you mind if I sit here?"

    "Bitch I'm sleeping...."

@DrakkarTyrannis later filled me in. She wanted to sit on my face. Do we need to add NSFW to the thread title or am I just banned?

I've found lots of women much hotter after having a conversation with them. Your mileage may vary.

I've had exactly one chick say that to me.

At least I think it was a chick. She kinda looked and sounded like one, but she had more of a mustache than I did.

I usually don't advertise it. Only one person slightly younger than me knows the music I like, but he isn't anywhere near as much of a fan as I am - but at least he knows.

When it is brought up, they tend to assume something acoustic with singing, or something like old prog rock or blues. That's because I'm in law, I'm usually in professional attire, I'm mild mannered, and I usually speak to older professionals who, if they are into music, are either into acoustic stuff or old prog rock and blues.

No-one guesses extreme metal, of course.

Honestly, I have no idea what kind of music people assume I play if they find out I'm a musician. I tend to avoid that specific question, because no one wants to hear about my abiding love of melodeath and prog metal.

Of course, if I want to shoehorn the fact that I'm a guitarist into a discussion, I lead with how I lost the end of my right hand middle finger a few years ago, which affected my ability. It gets the "I'm a guitarist" brag out there, piques their interest in a way that let's them know music is important to me, but also naturally leads away from the topic so that they're not as likely to ask any specific questions about the kind of music I play.

Of course, if you think that I'm intentionally trying to combine the appearance of the thoughtful musician and wounded bird personas with an ulterior motive, let me tell you...

    ...if it ever works.

I live in a redneck town but I don't look like a redneck so I assume that this is what they imagine...

Whenever people find out I play guitar, they usually think I'm in an Indie band for some reason. Imagine their surprise when they are met with black metal riffs.
