I found an X shaped guitar. Ok, so the collapse of Dean's dealer network meant I had to buy it from the US and deal with import fees and it was a gamble, the last time I played Korean Dean's they were junk, at least the two my former brother-in-law bought were.
This turned out to be an itch I needed to scratch. I bought it from Carlino Guitsrs from Medford MA, who were great to deal with. The guitar arrived packed perfectly, no damage, the guy even unscrewed the pickup switch tip and made a fretboard protecter out of his business cards. Between ordering and the guitar arriving was not even 48 hours - that is damn fast to get a guitar from the US to the UK.
First impressions: the neck pickup is OK but I'll probably change it for a zebra JB. The Dimebucker is nice and crunchy. The guitar is looooong and needs to be worn lower than I normally have my guitars but it actually feels great to play seated or standing. The fretboard is apparently 'ebony' but I'm 99.9% sure it's Richlite, which I actually consider a win as I really like it, having had acoustics with Richlite boards in the past.
The neck is pretty chunky but not crazy, I'm not super fussy about necks. The fretwork is crazy good for the price, as good as my US Fenders and Japanese Ibanez stuff. They are levelled, crowned and polished perfectly. I've owned a few Korean guitars and they all likely come from the same few factories but whoever did this Dean really must take pride in his work, it is immaculate.
My first impression is 'when did cheaper Deans get so damn good?'. I really hope the company can rally and return to the world stage. I used to hate them and think they were just tacky crap, but I think I've spent so long thinking they were uncool that they actually became cool.
Now I'm just waiting on a FR intonation tool to come from Amazon so I can set it up in D standard (A=425hz). The guitar actually comes with the Dime signature DR strings so I'm expecting they'll hold up at the lower tuning as it's currently in E.
