How much adjustment can you make to a capture using the gain/tone knobs after the fact?

Quite a lot imho, enough for me anyway. You can change presence and depth as well and even adjust some of the frequencies. You can also choose the position of the eq so in front, or after the amp.

From what I experienced the other night, it seemed to vary quite a bit. Some amps it felt like I was doing nothing, while others would kinda clean up by rolling back the gain….maybe it was just the particular captures I tried and I might have my head stuck up modeling’s ass way too far, but it wasn’t what I consider useful.

Can you turn up the gain higher on a capture? I really want to capture my Ampeg B25 and add a bit more gain to it as I love the sound of that amp and overall rawness and dryness of it... But I've tried boosting it with like 6 different pedals and this kills the tone by adding too much compression. If I could keep the same character but just add a bit more gain, it'd be perfect 😍

I was messing around with some toneNet captures this morning and found some neat ones. I hate the IR loader in ToneX though. It's finicky and only lets you pick one IR at a time, plus you can't adjust levels, etc. Wall of Sound didn't work well with ToneX either. Audio Assault's aIR loader worked well though.
Anyways, here's a couple of clips I made with my Jackson WR7 and 3rd party IRs if anyone is interested:

the interface and UI leaves a lot to be desired, but I've had fun poking around in it. 20 free downloadable models is pretty generous, and since I hit the threshold fast, I ended up buying it for a discount, as I already had Amplitube 5 anyway.
I've been really impressed with the Marshall SV20H captures, and there's a bunch of those to choose from. I tend to use the user stuff over the IK packs that I've got.

having a much snappier and better designed interface for browsing presets would go a long way. at least give us the option to add a favourite / default IR to drop in... having my ears bleed every time I flip to an amp only model and forget to toggle that on first sucks.

never used a Kemper, but I've been enjoying the digital models so much lately via Helix, Mercuriall, and the ToneX stuff that I haven't even fired up my tube amp. having the flexibility and being able to play with headphones is super useful for me, as I often play in the evening and don't want to startle the puppy when she's winding down or asleep.

Your captures sound pretty thick. What kind of bugs me out though is

slap a dummy cable head into your fx loop and record direct from your tube amps fx loop and just use IR’s if you dont wanna make noise. I do that with my 5150 iii 50w and it always sounds great. Make sure its plugged into a cab obv.

Ugh. Never mind lol

Sounds like it has some potential but I honestly love my FM9 and the tones I can get out of it. Pretty often I've loaded a model to a/b with a real amp, prefer the amp, dialed in the FM9 with similar (not identical) settings, and then been unable to tell the difference.

Note that this has always been using some form of power amp and real cab(s)--never in a recording type environment. No mics, no load boxes, no cab modeling.

I also love it when playing through my monitors and sub (with IRs obviously).

Really I feel like all these things can sound amazing. I love the sound of my NDSP plugins. Then I fire up the FM9 and very much prefer it over the plugins. But that doesn't change the fact that I loved the plugin.

A/B comparisons are the devil.

you mean using the tube amp head as a preamp via FX send? I could do that, but part of the appeal to using the digital stuff is the flexibility and options available. I can try a flavour of amp I'd never be able to justify owning with a few clicks.

I always assumed that profilers (ToneX included) are trying to emulate the entire amp -- preamp and power section, and how they interact with each other.
haven't come across any plugins that are used to model just the power section, intended to be fed a preamp only signal, but isn't that supposed to be a factor in how an amp sounds and responds?

not sure why any of that drives you nuts, lol. I'm new to a lot of this stuff, and I'm figuring out what works for me as I go. I'm not saying one is inherently better than the other, it's preference as much as what works for each person and their circumstances. shrug.

I wrote "what bugs me out is", then I never finished my thought, and forgot I wrote that in my post, and preceded to write something else underneath hahaha. Nothing drives me nuts except for when my son refuses to eat carrots and throws them on the floor

my dog flips her breakfast onto the floor here at work every morning. only at work, where it's a pain in the ass to clean up after she proceeds to not eat it for hours and the pumpkin I mix in dries and sticks to the tile floor. -_-
at least it's no longer becoming one with the low pile industrial carpet. I feel your pain

I'm finding that most the captures have like an unbearable amount of bass and fizz. Some band pass helped but they still sound waaaay worse than my fm3. Gotta be user error on my part and or the capturers part right?

I dont think so at all. Its not your fault. I wont deny Tonex has accurate captures. However, IK really has to continue to improve its ai capability. They should not treat it like a regular amp sim software. It should not be treated like "set it and forget it". AI should be continuously improved upon. Users shouldnt wait for Tonex 2 for the core ai to improve.

Everyones ears are different. Some may overlook certain frequencies or feel and believe Tonex is the best. Others like myself will notice its many faults

After spending more time with Tonex, i think its the stomp models that arent good. If I use a real OD pedal or a model from the NAM capture plugin, Tonex sounds really good. I got some good results using one of the NAM od captures with Tonex. Tonex stomps sound weird to me. Even so, using a real od improves tonex, it still has weird flubby low end without it.

Hmm keep in mind that I don't really spend time playing other captures than my own, but the captures of my own amps are extremely accurate. Quite a bit more accurate than the QC too which already was a bit closer than the Kemper.

So if the captures you're trying sound bad the source from which they're captured is either bad, so badly tweaked etc, or there was something wrong with the capture process.

Yea definitely, I liked what hear from you and Mendel etc. This is definitely evidence that there needs to be some QC or good rating system or something.

There's still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the file browsing etc. I'm sure they'll work on it though since Tonex really seems to be a priority for IK.

We’ll see….too often users wait far too long for important updates.

Downloaded the free version today to play around a bit, found a couple profiles on Tonenet that were pretty solid, one that Ola did and another person did a Triple Crown profile that was pretty cool.

I'll have to see how they sound over my monitors, with just the headphones I'm not hearing anything so far that's got me ready to swear off the stuff in Helix Native or on my Axe.

The profiles definitely respond nicely, so that's a big plus. This definitely seems like an improvement over the last time I played with Kemper.
