String Gauges (Drop F#)

    so i want to tune to drop f# using a 6 string guitar. im guessing im going to have to be using 7/8 string sets? What gauges? Help me out guise

    What's the scale length of the fretboard? I'm guessing 25.5 since it's a 6 string. If so, you should be ok with an 8 string set that has a .074 or .080 as the bottom string

    Yeah, 74 or an 80 is fine. As you say, just use an 8 set with a heavy bottom and it will run good. I think I have a 72 for drop G when I do so, and it's pretty much spot on what I want. An extra semi-tone wouldn't warrant more than a little heavier gauge.

    cheers fellas :D any help on brands? been looking at d'addario but any other suggestions?

    I'm a big fan of D'Addario sets. Just go with whatever is readily available to you and see if you like the feel. You can start experimenting from there.

    F# B E A C# F# ? somewhere along the lines of 17-78. at least. i'd personally go 20-80. all strings wound :lol:

    With bigger gauges, remember that you may have to drill the tuner hole and/or widen the nut slot.

    Ernie Ball has a baritone set that's 13-72 that should work for you. May be a little loose, but it's worth a shot
