I have a feeling this is gonna go left pretty quick as everyone has their personal opinions about gear youtubers, BUT, today I was randomly looking up Line 6 Helix reviews for a good metal tone and assuming I would mostly find a bunch of several year old videos as the Helix isn't the flavor of the week anymore I was surprised to find this

So not only was it posted just 3 weeks ago (somehow even though I'm subscribed to the channel I missed this video), BUT it's not a super moderny metal tone AND he shows it in the context of a mix. It covers exactly what I was looking for.

To be honest I really appreciate this channel as Jon isn't annoying, he's actually a likeable person, his reviews actually sound good (which is sometimes really hard to come by with gear youtubers for some reason), he plays well, AND he edits the videos in a way that gets to the good stuff without a bunch of bullshit. He doesn't devote videos to the latest idiotic gear gossip, he doesn't waste time making ragebait videos (*Insert popular gear here* SUCKS! CLICK FOR MORE!), his stuff is upbeat, positive, and he seems to enjoy doing it.

Personal note, he also has one or two guitars with a Seymour Duncan Custom in it which is great for me as it's my favorite pickup. You know how rare it is to see anyone doing heavy music demos with that pickup?

He also doesn't seem to be in that gear youtuber circle that all reviews the same shit at the same time. You can tell when a company is hitting the press circuit because the same handful of youtubers all review the exact same thing at the exact same time. He seems to be out of that loop which is nice as he covers a wide range of gear and his reviews are actually useful.

He also posted this video and now there are a couple of speakers I really want to try. Honestly I rarely watch gear reviews that make me actually want to buy the shit they're reviewing so kudos to him on that.

Listen, most gear reviewers are kind of annoying and have to be taken with a grain of salt to enjoy them, but this channel is definitely the best of the bunch for me. I know he's a member of this forum, and I can't remember his name, but should you read this, just know I appreciate your channel and felt it needed to be praised. Please keep doing what you do, as the gear youtube world needs more people who are actually likeable and can review gear well.

His rockerverb shootout pointed me to the OH orng212 IRs and they helped for what I was after.

Definitely one of the better ones!

He is one of the only ones that doesn't annoy me and he does do a very good job with his videos. His tones are excellent.

However I gotta say that the youtube whore thing in general is getting so old to the point where I don't really want to see anyone's videos anymore honestly. I am just losing interest in gear videos because I've had my fill and would rather be playing than watching.

I literally only watch snippets of videos now when I'm thinking of buying something specific or confused on how to use something. I figure out my answer then leave Youtube.

Jon has an account here and he got shit on almost immediately.

He definitely has one of the better gear channels and I find myself tuning in even if I have no intention of buying what he is showing.

Yeah I remember he kinda got lumped in with those people who would just come in here to get people to watch their vids while not contributing to anything..but eventually I think he won people over as it was clear he wasn't one of those people. And his videos were actually good.

Honestly, when I first got my Tonex pedal and started looking up captures to download, his 5150/6505 were some of the best ones I could find.

This place tends to shit on YTers that post and run. Which I agree, they do suck lol. Jon did do that at first, but after one thread got really zesty about it, he started being more of a regular member. So he took the criticism at least lol.

Also yeah besides the run of the mill clickbait thumbnails, Jon is good people. Just focuses on doing gear demos and comparisons, with the occasional unboxing which is whatever lol. I don't give a shit about "OMG GUITAR COMPANY DID THIS" or "CHECK OUT THIS NEW LINEUP WHILE I RAMBLE", just "hey this sounds cool check it out"

Definitely up there with Euge Valovirta.

Euge is the second favorite for no bullshit reviews with great tones and good playing.

SDS is one of the few gear channels that I bother with anymore, just enjoy the presentation and doing both isolated and in the mix tones, and his videos have helped me with some decisions in the past. The comparisons/shootouts that Jon does are good and well thought out also.

Agree with Euge being up there also, he’s got an insane ear for tones and playing chops, but he makes everything so relatable and to the point for peons like me.

Jon is my favorite simply due to the variety of tones he gets and whatnot, but Euge is probably my favorite player. His tones and playing just hit the right way. A little bit of modern metal mixed in with a little bit of 80's shred and attitude.

He almost sold me on a Quad Cortex but then I remembered I'm not Euge Valovirta LOL. Why hasn't a 5150 ever sounded like this when I've played one?

You can say whatever about Jon, but he actually puts effort into making a full track to demo gear. 95% of YouTubers play the exact same few riffs every time. Their reviews are so lazy in comparison.

The only criticism I have is that he can make almost everything sound good. It makes me question buying ANY additional gear. I wish sometimes he would use gear that is considered “bad” to prove it can work with the right ear and playing ability.

I'd like to see Jon experiment with "bad" gear but I also think he's the type to not review something at all if it's bad. Makes sense why he hasn't done it.
