Complaining about mixing is a valid point in my book. Take Structures' Divided By as an example. Great album but the horrible clipping makes it unpleasant to listen to.

my old band's drummer was a percussion major and into John Cage, musique concrete, and all kinds of weird shit. during intro/noise interludes he'd do stick rubs, bang together pieces of rebar I'd found him, etc.
I could see him doing the above, but the needles would have to be close-mic'd in stereo
edit: oh yeah, he also had a violin bow he'd bow his cymbals with. really cool sounds.

Hahaha! Now that everyone has a home studio and does their "mixes and masters", it's funny to see anyone who knows like the bare minimum questioning the mixing choices of professional studios or older recordings.
