I guess when you have symmetrical wings like the Dean ML, it is more of an X shape...makes sense.

Anyhow, let me add one to the thread. This is a NAMM masterbuilt star by Red Dave. It has two things I despise, a mahogany body and EMG pickup. But. It sounds great and it's a keeper. I might change out the EMG at some point.

The body is super light which I enjoy, and I am a sucker for reverse headstocks which I have not seen often on a star.

And to the OP, what have you decided about your build in terms of the color?
Who is building it for you? Curious minds want to know!

I want to go with a blood red stain on ash. That, with a Strat headstock that'll be modified a little bit, will come out similar to the image I attached. Except, of course, it not being a Xiphos shape but a traditional Star.
It'll be built bij LAP Guitars in The Netherlands. He's built a 7 string Explorer for me before so I'm quite certain of his abilities.

I love the look of stars, but the main issue I've found is the cutaway is not big enough, so just normal playing up near the 24th or so fret means my hand is getting stuck there- no large stretches or anything factoring in

Sold my other ESP star guitar, which definitely pains me, but I still have this one:

I actually looked at all the guitars here and went to look at my own as well as pick it up and try the upper frets. How big of a space do you need?"

Here's an old pic I took when playing/holding a Jackson USA Star....as you can see I legit can't really comfortably use my pinkie on the highest frets, as the back of my hand and pinkie actually get stuck and rub constantly against the cutaway, and that's again with no stretching at all

There are always 2-3 main issues with Star guitars...at least the traditional Star shape, like this Gus G Jackson or Charvels like mine.

Strap button placement can be an issue for some. It can make the guitar lean out away from you.

Upper fret access. I can see how this can be an issue for some folks. My Charvel is 22 fret, and if I fret the high B at 19th fret, getting up to fret 22 is tight. I have personally adapted to tapping up there a bit, but where there is a will there is a way.

Jack placement. Sometimes the input jack placement is not ideal depending on who makes the guitar.

But let's face it, those of us who play stars regularly deal with these issues, big or small, because Stars are cool as hell!

I don't think there's really a difference between X and star shapes. I see it as just two different names describing the same thing.
As for why there are so few..because this site is mainly super strat oriented.

Not the best photo. I suppose more X than star, but fills the ergonomic gap for me on the Jackson side of things:

I always though those storm graphics on Jacksons looked cheap but this is the first time I've ever seen one that looks great. Maybe it's the guitar shape or something

It does lay out on the shape really well and is painted in a nice way. I still sort of think of redoing it in like airplane camo sort of thing, which I think suits warriors really well.
