Serious question - is this a joke?

I mean, they could definitely be releasing this music - which is a complete departure from anything they've released in their 20 years of existence - under a different side project name. Bands do it all the time, you've got your liquid tension experiments, your prize fighter infernos etc. They aren't because in order to make money off it they need the A7x name. In order to have people pay to see it live, they have to put it in between their old stuff that people are really paying to see. I like Avenged Sevenfold, but I don't think the criticisms of these new wacky out there songs are invalid.

As a fan, I would prefer they let their good work stand for itself and lay the band down and move on. I feel the same about Metallica and In Flames and many other bands that lost what made them work along the way.

But that’s kind of their whole point; they don’t cater to anyone’s wishes but their own.

LTE was a side project, which, at the time only had 2 members of DT and isn’t that Prize Fighter Inferno just that Claudio dude’s solo thing? This is still Avenged Sevenfold, the full band, putting out music. Why in the hell would anyone spend that long building a business to do with they please as, come out under a different name this late in the game when they’re ‘thing’ since the start is to release whatever they want. That just doesn’t compute in my head at all.

I just find it interesting that the world has gotten so cynical that even when bands are writing completely non-commercial music they STILL get shit for “doing it for the money”. It just reads to me as “I don’t like it, let me reach in my back pocket for a half-assed attempt at an insult….ah, here’s a good one, the money”

Like I said, I don’t dig all their stuff, I listened to half of that Hail To The King album and haven’t heard it since because it was such a blatant “Let’s do The Black Album” and it was too on the nose for me, but I respect the hell out of them for doing whatever they want, knowing they‘ll catch shit from the people that actually buy their albums. More so, I think it’s badass they challenge their fanbase to keep up with them, semi-forcing them to get into a different genre.

As much as people want to hate it, when they were on TRL, there was no other band out there playing with the technical skill these guys were in mainstream music. It was still a few years before the djent guys, Tosins, Plinis, etc were out there and it was A7X getting a whole new group of people into that kind of music, most certainly opening a door for the previously mentioned guys to pick up fans.

I just feel like you either aren't reading my posts or you are ignoring what I'm saying because you're arguing against points I haven't made

I love A7X. They're amazing songwriters, musicians and performers. But yeah, the last two songs I've heard are really not very good. "Nobody" was just that simple droning riff. And this has gone too far the other way - just random stuff stuck together, and it's just not very tuneful, musical or satisfying to listen to :(

It was three! And people release stuff as side projects so as to not dilute their own brand/sound (or just for artistic or thematic reasons), but A7X's albums are already so eclectic at this point I don't think it'd make sense either.

Rudess wasn't a member of DT yet when he joined LTE.

Exactly, especially after their last album, which was already a prog album. Now they’re just moving into the more avant garde direction of it.

And actually, I heard “We Love You” again yesterday and actually found myself digging it. They pull it off live pretty damn well, for being as odd as it is.

And the above is why I crack up when people start in with the “Matt lost his voice” BS….dude is singing the shit out of that set. I think people, a lot like James LaBrie, let the sound/tone of his voice overtake what he’s technically doing. I’d fucking dread singing a set from either band, what both those dudes do on a technical level night after night is pretty fucking impressive.

I think he will still do fine for them -- but honestly I really don't much care for his vocals on anything after Waking the Fallen haha. City of Evil is largely still pretty awesome, and I'll still listen to later stuff sometimes because Synyster Gates just rips so hard.

I'm not one to be negative on here usually but holy shit this is just NOT for me. Just because the vocals may be hard doesn't mean they sound good. His voice just sounds weird now

First thing that came to mind is that this is probably their attempt at sounding like Mr. Bungle.

Not really into it or this band in general, but at least they are trying something different instead of repeating the same album over and over.
