You have to be open to different things because they won't be available forever. I learned that lesson ages ago when Taco Bell discontinued the Sana Fe chalupas. (I'm still a little salty over that)
More or less salty than Taco Bell, though?

My grandmother used to always complain about how the bananas were no damned good. I guess there used to be some really tasty bananas until some fungus literally drove them into extinction in the 50's, and, ever since then, we've been eating the second banana and not the top banana. I can't imagine my favourite food item just up and going extinct forever.

But it's happened tons of times with guitar gear. Parker Fly, Transscale, Trantrem, Digitech, Modulus, ... even Crate. All gone.

Everyone knows banana flavors don’t matter in a mix. Once you bake that sum’bitch into bread it all tastes the same. Sure some bananas tasted better before the 50s, but no one was able to tell the difference in the housewife bake-offs back then, and they certainly can’t now.

Ripeness of a banana needs to be just right for baking. ;)

@bostjan I think Taco Bell is much saltier than I in general but I still get fired up over them taking away the Santa Fe flavor. Dicks!

Speaking of the OG banana...

I thought I had read somewhere modern artificial banana flavors are closer to what the "original" banana tasted like. Or at least an approximation of the flavor.

I have heard that before too. I never had a pre-1960 banana, since I wasn't born yet, but rumour is that pre-CBS era NOS bananas might still be out there, cryogenically frozen until the music industry starts making a comeback, so that it can weed out all of the poser bananas.

We are heading towards another banana pocalypse, as well. Your grandchildren probably won't have the same bananas you grew up with.

"Grandpa, when you were younger, did guitar pickups matter?"
"Well, there, sonny, let your dear old grandad tell you a story... see, the year was two thousand and ought six, and we had a gadget we used to use called a 'tube amplifier,' but then someone named Cliff came along with a new gizmo called an 'AXE FX' and nothing was the same ever since then- nothing that used to matter really mattered at all anymore..." mumbles incoherently.

Well said.

There's probably a tendency to read "I don't care" in this thread and interpret it as "I don't care, and neither should you," when that's not likely the case. But there's also a vocal group saying "I don't care, therefore it doesn't matter," which leaves open ended whether they mean "therefore it doesn't matter to me, " or in general. Honestly, a fair number of youtube videos demonstrating how X doesn't change the tone only serve to demonstrate how my ears are different from the person's who created the video. I'm not even very picky about tone- I know what I like and anything that's kind of in or around my batting zone will work. I think you kind of have to be this way, because if you fall in love with the tone of some weirdass boutique pickup made of samarium magnets through some weirdass boutique amplifier that uses whacky tubes with weirdass boutique speakers with cones made of yeti fur, you're going to be up a creek when all of that stuff inevitably becomes unavailable.

BOO THIS MA... Wait...

I swear, sometimes when I buy bananas they taste pretty good but sometimes they taste like glue, in a really bad way.

There must be more than one kind...

While I definitely do not have the ear of more experienced and talented guitarists. I will definitely say that different pick ups make a difference. Certain companies have their own thing across their range that you do notice. Like for me Ducan stuff usually is brighter and more top end, whereas Dimarzio's have a warmer tone usually, more low end. Bare Knuckles are very mid forward and clear in big chords. Then you get into actives which again EMG and Fishman have their own thing. I've not heard enough of the Duncan Blackouts to really know how they compare if I'm being honest.
What I am still really trying to learn is how different speakers and mic's effect the tone heard as well.
