Yeah it looks like the line in the sand is new content. General performance patches are free updates, any sort of new content makes it paid.
Yeah but new content with the two Zeldas is a joke. No one gives a shit about using a mobile Nintendo app to show your map. It’s paying to play a game you already own on a system you already own at the resolution of the new system. It’s scummy especially if it’s more than 10 bucks (what the paid ps4-5 upgrades tend to be).

Anyway I’m buying one cause Bloodborne 2. Wtf.

Edit: it’s multiplayer focused and is 90 bucks??? Nevermind.

Not sure about MP4 but BotW and TotK were confirmed free?
I didn’t see that. It was unclear whether it was some kind of package deal with Mario party and Kirby and those two or if they were all four separate paid upgrades.

MKW is also going to be $90 for physical, and $80 for digital

The game pricing sucks so much ass ($80 for Mario Kart is bullshit) but ngl the value proposition for the hardware itself is pretty great. $450 for a handheld that has a 1080p 120 Hz display with HDR10 and VRR is incredible and it comes with a dock, an HDMI cord, and two controllers. The Steam Deck OLED supports HDR but it starts at $549, has an 800p screen, and is only 90 Hz. Impressive piece of kit ngl.

You need to log in to the website with your Nintendo Account and there's a section where you can declare your interest in buying one. Apparently this prompts Nintendo to send an e-mail with purchase information whenever the console becomes available (or, rather, "when it is your time to purchase"... whatever that means)

EDIT: pricey console, too. USD 450 / CAD 699.
Thanks for the heads up, did that.

Umm that was fucking amazing.

It's like it was made specifically for me. Fucking Gamecube, fucking Air Riders, fucking DK Bananza, fucking Bloodborne 2, fucking Silksong.

I will pay for the Kirby upgrade as DLC, which is fine. I will not be happy if I have to pay for BotW and TotK to run better because that is bullshit.

Switch 2 already has more exclusives than PS5.

Watching the Direct back, Star Wars Outlaws is such an interesting port. It's one of those "RT is on all the time and you can't turn it off" games, and it's... shockingly clean looking. Kinda eyeballing it and other ports, it seems like games that aren't built to take advantage of the Nvidia hardware and software kinda just brute force their way on to the system to mixed results (Elden Ring), but games that are really built for/around RT and DLSS like Outlaws come over surprisingly cleanly. Be interesting to see how things play out in the future if that's the case.

What a thing huh? I was coming here to whine about the prices but I see the general opinion seems to be the same everywhere. Everyone is whining about the prices 🤣

Anyway I don’t really care about Nintendo games, never had a Nintendo console. My fascination with the Switch is more about being able to play big screen games like RE4, 5, 6, Skyrim, Witcher 3, STALKER, old AC trilogy and so on, on a portable. But yeah as mind blowing as that would be I don’t see myself realistically using the console too much when going outside.
Maybe like on a rare plane or bus trip?

I have zero problem with the console price. I have a big problem with the game price. 80-90 for a base game is shitty, period. If they didn’t have a history of additional paid dlc with Mario kart and smash bros and Zelda BOTW and what not this might be more able to be justified in my mind, but no. I hated the change to 70 and they’re making the jump from 70 to 80 many years faster than the jump from 60 to 70. It just seems really scummy.

Their online storefronts have a history of vanishing every console generation and not carrying your games between systems so “digital purchases” seem like an actually much worse proposition, so having that be the “standard” 70 price is also scummy.

Out of the games shown the most interesting (after the fine print about Bloodborne 2 being multiplayer only - fuck that noise) is the 3d donkey Kong.

I absolutely love hyrule warriors 1 and absolutely did not enjoy hyrule warriors 2 at all, thought it totally sucked. So we’ll see if the new one is more like the first!!

I would definitely get Metroid Prime 4 for it also.

It's so weird. The Switch 2 system is a great value proposition. $450 for a handheld that has a 1080p 120 Hz display with HDR10 and VRR is incredible. And it comes with a dock, an HDMI cable, and two controllers. It's a good deal, great even, which makes fucking the consumer over with the game prices all the more baffling.

It's been an issue for a while, imo. Games are too damned expensive. If GTA6 really launches around $100 I won't buy that game till it hits $30 or less, I don't care how long it takes. Same thing with Switch 2 games, if the base price is $80-90 I will wait till things go on sale. I'll get the MKW bundle, but I have a bunch of Switch games I haven't played in years because I sold my OLED Switch, figured I'd wait for the next Switch.

$80-90 Mario Kart may have just given Rockstar the okay to launch GTAVI at $100, which would be insane. Especially when you consider the payments don't stop after that initial pricetag due to GTA Online...

I will believe gta6 being 100 when I see it. If they sell EARLY ACCESS for 100 or some utterly worthless preorder bonuses/digital art books (PDFs) and that balloons it to 100 and regular is still 70 then I don’t care cause I will never buy the over-70 version. This is just scummy and you know if they do it everyone else will follow suit cause they’ll know they can get away with it.

The other thing with Nintendo games is they do not discount like steam/xbox/playstation. Their major titles in particular tend to stay the launch price forever, with occasional sales that are usually only like 25% off. I remember buying BOTW the first time I saw it less than 50 and that was YEARS after launch, and I think it was still 45 (starting from base 60).

Third party e-store stuff will occasionally get better discounts but it’s still night and day worse than every other platform.

If they really sell for 80-90 and do t face a catastrophic loss of sales numbers from it, you can probably expect that in three years maybe you can buy it for 45 dollars on Black Friday or something. But 30? Never!

I also don't have a problem buying used, as I prefer having the physical carts. Overpricing games means they're going to lose a bunch of my business either way.

We'll hope it goes down like the 3DS. Sales for that were terrible so they reduced console prices like 40%. If games went down to 70 or lower I am totally on board again. However I don't see gamers actually boycotting this. They like to complain and then buy it anyway, often in expensive editions.

Mario Kart bundled with the system can be justified as it being $50. I'll probably do that. But no way am I buying anything for 80/90 by itself in the next couple years. Especially considering our economy's liable to crash horribly at any moment.

The argument I've heard for this rapid price hike on videogames is that videogames were 60 USD for like, decades. Like, Ocarina of Time was $60 when it launched at the end of the 90s, but its development costs were only a fraction of what they were for a modern game like, say, Breath of the Wild. (Which was also $60 at launch.) With inflation, higher development costs, and markets that are pretty well saturated (virtually the entire world plays videogames nowadays, whereas it was still very much an expanding market back in the 90s and early 2000s), it makes sense that games are going up in price. Factor that everyone is losing their minds about politics nowadays and a potential huge crash in the economy, and everyone is wanting to cash in while they can.

Honestly, as crappy as it might be, it's probably just a matter of time before people get used to games costing $90-$100 and that becomes the new standard.

This is corporate apologism and you see it all over certain subreddits (like the nintendo one in particular where it's fanboy central).

Back in the day the cartridges for games were a huge chunk of the cost. Cost of producing CDs was way, way lower, leading to a gigantic increase in profits once they switched from cartridges to CDs/DVDs. Digital is another GIGANTIC step down (no longer have to print manuals, ship out millions of copies to stores, give a percentage to retailers, etc). They just keep making it cheaper and cheaper to get the game to customers while cheerleaders will be like "BUT INFLATION! COST OF GAMES HASN'T KEPT UP WITH INFLATION, WE'RE RIPPING OFF THE GAME COMPANIES!" Well, game distribution expenses have also gone down astronomically! And sales have gone way up from what they were at 20 years ago, so that kind of cancels out the ballooning production budgets.

They just see inflation and think "yeah, i bet people will pay that!" and do it cause they can, not cause they need to. What they don't realize is inflation has gotten to the point where people have LESS money to spend on videogames, not more, cause salaries aren't going up with inflation.
