Nintendo of America has long been shitty about video game prices. The rest of the world isn't getting the same gouge.
You say that, but the Swedish distributor of Nintendo products is the fucking worst and always has been.
The bundle is the equivalent of $750 or £580.
Physical edition of MKW sets you back a cool $100 here.

I'm fully expecting that the physical MKW in Canada will be like C$109 or something. New games have already been C$80-90 for a few years over here, even the digital-only version of Baldur's Gate 3 for PS5 I believe was C$90 when I got it in 2023.

According to what I saw, the backwards compatibility with Switch games seems to be more in the territory of "awkward compatibility". Not that I expected it to work with every game (I think there's like 15000 of them), but come on.

It's probably something they can fix at a system level for some games, though (I know they do stuff like that in Windows), but you'll have to rely on developers updating their games in many cases.

Maybe it's not so bad, we'll see.

Hopefully it's like PS4/PS5, there were a handful of buggy games but most of them got patched, I think. The only one I actually had on the "doesn't work" list was Assassin's Creed Syndicate and I know that got fixed.

I appreciate them being transparent about it with the list, and I do think it'll be like that. They said they'll work to get more games running.

great more alienation devices as if the ones in the market weren't already enough hurray

you go play your guitars, they expect you to do so
Lol I thought we stopped thinking and speaking this way in the early 2000s. Are metal bands also just satanic cults? Should mothers let their children play guitars, clearly the devil's instrument?
Now if you told me the same about social media...

... anyway.

Seems this whole price thing for the new system and the new games is getting out of hand. I had the Treehouse event on yesterday in the background the whole day, and every single time I looked it was a literal barrage of posters ONLY posting "DROP THE PRICE". I saw zero comments about the games themselves.
I don't have that much of an issue with the pricing, but I do take issue with the way Nintendo went out of their way to get people hyped up while burying the price of things beneath piles and piles of marketing and being deliberately vague about any pricing specifics.

I mean, it's not like the could strait-up celebrate price raising.

My theory is that they had no choice but to do it now. Their pricing today is sort of setting the precedent for the life of the console, and it's likely those price bumps would otherwise have happened industry-wide this generation either way. Everyone's been holding back waiting for someone else to go first - so there was a choice to be made between ripping the bandaid off now, or being behind the curve and leaving money on the table.

We can complain all we want, but the only way they will lower the prices is not buying the console and games.

And that's pretty unlikely, even for people who complained about the prices (like me).

I would be shocked if there wasn't already some market analysis done by someone somewhere to project that the lost sales to sticker shock will pale in comparison to the demand for a Switch follow up.

Bonus conspiracy theory: The price of individual games going up masks the sticker shock of the console itself - as evidenced by people saying "wow, I'm ok with the console price but those games".

Nintendo just announced US preorders for the Switch 2 are delayed so they can "reasses" prices - every other country can still order April 9, though!

That's actually hilarious, I hope they just block all sales to the US indefinitely till Trump's out of power. Or up the price 50% for the US only. That might actually turn around some of the GAMER (TM) types that all are diehard Trumpers.

I've seen the True Gamers saying they aren't going to buy the Switch 2 now because Nintendo made it political.

I get the price increase for the console, I do. Same way that the PS5 like C$700+ and Steamdecks ain't cheap. I'm in the camp that thinks the price of the games is insane, but I also wasn't gonna reorder or buy the console day 1 anyway. I have way too much shit in my backlog to keep me busy and honestly none of the launch titles are making me go "oh fuck I need that!" so I'll wait til it's on sale for as little a possible. I'm also super jaded about the price of things since baseline video cards became $1k+.

I have trouble thinking this because I've seen the cost of games - as in the cost of creating them - and the cost of making games is insane. The amount of effort and art and time and sweat and crunch and drama and licensing and marketing and salaries and livelihoods and ideas and scrapped projects and iteration and proposals and QA and platform requirements and legal requirements and on and on and on that all go into the cost of a game - I honestly am shocked at how low games are priced.

They're priced low enough that people have backlogs of so many games that they don't have time to play them all - that's not a sign of a product being overpriced.
