So the story goes:

The music store I've frequently haunted and developed a strong rapport for a good 17-18 years fell on hard times during the 2 years of relentless lockdowns. It came to the point where the owner was forced to sell the store. But after a few weeks of no buying, they threw a clearance sale. I wanted to buy something as a sort of parting gift for all the years of service and bought this guitar, along with telling as many of my friends to buy their stock clean. Then the eleventh hour a buyer came along. Turns out the new buyer had a dream of owning a music store so it was some kind of fairy tale ending for everyone. The staff morale just boosted drastically, and everyone was on high spirits. That store really felt like going to a friend's house to hang out, and I'm just glad they're getting revitalised and live on.

Oh, the guitar is an Ibanez AZ2204 in 'hazy rose metallic'- it's pink.

fetch

Admittedly this wasn't my first choice in colour. I wanted the black version but turns out of of my friends I let loose in the clearance ended up buying it. I got hit with the jealous bug and put this on lay by the next day.

That said, I've warmed up to the metallic pink; it looks amazing up close in personal. My usual photo behind the red curtains do not do it justice.

Playability and sonically, it feels like the ideal session tool. It's been an incredibly long time since I picked up an HSS instrument so this was fun to get reacquainted with this pickup config. Then add the alter switch that allows 4 extra sounds (the neck/bridge tele esque sound and neck/middle series for a quasi neck humbucker sound) adds a ton of versatility. And the Gotoh bridge is surprisingly solid enough to cop abusive flutters, dips and divebombs that are usual to my style.

I have a few minor gripes. Having gotten used to bright glassy 60s voiced single coils, the mid range focus of the SD Hyperions threw me off a bit. Though the biggest and sweatiest gripe is the fact that the bridge humbucker placement is significantly more distant to the bridge than any of my other guitars. Granted that it's not a deal breaker but it certainly feels weird to me. I guess these are the kind of adjustments made and tailored to the neo fusion/soul/social media crowd. Still, this guitar is a blast to play and will be getting frequent use for those odd non metal jams. But enough wall of text.

TL/DR: this guitar is sweet and a nice different change to what I'm used to.

Cool... but yeah, i don't believe you, that guitar ain't pink.. 😁 just kidding...

If you're into modding, throw in a Freeway 5B5-01 switch, have 10 different options to play with and then some with an extra something for the mini switch... like some reverse phasing or changing the tone cap's value or something like that...?

Sounds interesting. Though oddly enough this is one of the few guitars I own that I intend to keep stock... or at least as long as I could before even considering to change the pickups.

Hey you finally got an AZ! About time. :)
What I like most about mine is really just how many switching options it has, and how comfortable a guitar it is. That neck is something else. Oh and I feel back in love with the Hyperions after switching them out for a while. Granted, I have a 2204, which is a bit more on the modern side of things, tonally speaking.

Congrats and HNGD!
Very happy to hear that the store is making a big comeback :) good for everyone involved!

glad to hear things worked out for the store and those involved.

glad to hear that you got a great instrument!

Congrats! That is a beautiful color. I hope you play the hell out of it!

Cheers gents. The guitar will definitely get a lot of playtime. And agreed with Alberto7, the neck is great. Playing it is like rich creamery butter. Getting an AZ was inevitable, and I was actually close to getting a Premium version from the first run, also had a fantastic neck, but I'm glad I waited for this one. I still love my RGs and will probably be remain my mainstays, but this is great for those call in sideman moments.

I've yet to meet the new owner of the store but I've known the 2 new managers for a while so it still feels like a musical home whenever I come it. It even came to the point where out of pure trust, I was helping them with a customer having first time Floyd Rose troubles. They've also signed up with a ton of new accounts so I'm looking forward to all the new stock they'll bring it. There's music stores closer to me but when I've always come back here thanks to the friendly service. Funny how this all started when I bought an RG620X nobody wanted all those years ago.

Hey no! In my opinion the dyna-MIX switching on the AZs is one of their best features!

A pink Ibanez AZ is peak Yootoober (like, comment, subscribe). I was eyeballing these for a minute, last year. The super playable neck joint on these looks pretty interesting. Congrats.

Have you looked into the Frewway blade switches, specially the 5B5-01 one? It really simplifies a lot of stuff, all those sounds in one switch instead of 2. Plus, they'll play with the pickups without filtering them, which you cannot say about the Ibanez switching, which contains resistors and/or caps included besides those found on the volume and tone pots... well, in the end, it really only matters if the player likes it or not. Good to know you like it, points for Ibanez for making you happy! Cheers bro.

Oh believe me that I'm well aware of this, hence was spewing when my friend bought the black AZ. It was either go pink, or get an RG5170G, which is also an amazing axe. But I need more RGs like I need more holes in my head. The AZ is a unique option for me.

Time to rehearse that chant, silly thumbnail face and remind people to RING THE BELL!

Yup, i know about the Freeway switches. I'm not sure that they could replicate the functionality of the dyna-MIX stuff. I don't think dyna-MIX uses other components either; it's mainly a super switch and a DPDT working together.

I've seen the circuit for sale on Reverb and the pictures clearly shown a few resistors and/or caps. The mini switch had a small PCB with said components as did the switch, which was not a super switch.

The Freeway switches won't replicate all of the dyna-mix combos, but will cover most and do others the dyna-mix doesn't... and is free of electronic components, so you can feel your unaltered pickups.

... but it's just an idea, you don't have to follow it if you like what you have at the moment.

Cheers bro...

:bump:

I said I was planning to keep it stock for as long as I could, but recently decided that wasn't the case. Out came the stock Hyperions, and in came Dimarzios. 2 Satch Tracks and a Fred.

fetch

And a little crappy sounding clip of me fumbling around with the controls.

I'll confess that still enjoyed the Hyperions but I guess I just wanted a bit more teeth. Got inspired by the recent JS Goldboy and got the same config and regret nothing. It's the first I've really deep dived into the Fred, and harmonics just jump at you when you look at it. And I like that it's almost like a super charged single coil. The Satch Tracks are great, basically giving the juice that I wanted while cleans up nicely when the volume is rolled off, and I'm shocked I can still get stratty sounds out of, what ostensibly is a tweak between a Pro Track and a Chopper. Though what surprised me the most is running the neck and middle in series, which puts me to instant fusion territory. Just a massive singing sound. I've been using the guitar a fair bit along with my usual staples and the upgrade lit some new fire into it so I'll be using it a lot more now.

I'm also treating the Gotoh trem like how I treat my Edges/Floyds (like they owe me money) and it's stays in tune like a champ.

Cool guitar, and glad there's a happy ending to the story as well. I hate seeing good local shops go under - there's only one here where I live in WA where there used to be five or so. It's sad, so I'm glad that one somewhere survived.

Cheers all.

Now if only Ibanez can release this model with a recessed Edge.

Also the store recently got Doug Steele / Shred Durst into the fold. Looking forward to meeting him, though I can't help but feel intimidated...
