I almost bought an EBMM JPX... but I somehow showed restraint and saved my money. I've really wanted a Telecaster. I've really wanted a semi-hollow body Telecaster. I've wanted to build a custom guitar. I am not patient. This happened.

Guinea Pig: Fender Modern Player Thinline Deluxe Telecaster

    Specs
    • Schaller M6 Locking Tuners
    • Misc black hardware (neck plate, football jack cover, screws, etc.)
    • WD Music solid matte black pick guard
    • Hipshot Fixed Bridge (drilled for saddle wires & routed trench under bridge)
    • GraphTech Ghost Saddles
    • GraphTech Acousti-Phonic Board w/ 9v battery
    • Piezo Push/Pull 250k Volume Pot w/ Mid-Dark EQ Boost on pull
    • DiMarzio Virtual P90 in Neck
    • DiMarzio Super Distorion Soapbar in Bridge
    • 3 Position Rotary Switch (Piezo/Piezo & Mags/Mags)
    • 500k No-load CTS Tone Pot w/ Orange Pill Capacitor
    • 500k CTS Volume Pot
    • Speedknobs (Blank with drilled indicator for 3 position rotary)
    • Upper 3 way toggle (Neck/Bridge & Neck/Bridge)
    • GraphTech Stereo Output Jack

It's not perfect, but I am pretty happy with the outcome considering the lack of tools and patience. I will probably end up replacing the neck (it doesn't have and adjustable truss rod aggh ... and way too glossy ... and I did a piss poor job mounting the tuners ... and I'm obsessed with birdseye maple).

    Left to do:
    • Route an opening for a battery box
    • Intonate/Action

I am honing in sounds with my Pod HD Pro + Logic. It is the most fun guitar I have used in a while (ever? :hbang:)

I photographed the process and learned a fair amount... so I will be adding a build thread eventually. If you have any questions about the install though, feel free to ask and I will do my best to help. I had to make a lot of guesses on this build do to lack of similar builds and/or detailed specs on parts and the actual guitar.

Nice! HNGD! I need to pickup a thinline one day. I do love humbucker teles, just picked up a FSR Custom Tele with Super Distortions myself, they sound great.

Thanks! Yeah, bucks are fun. DiMarzio said Nay on Super D in bridge of semi-hollow body because of feedback.. but so far, its good. Fun for more distorted riffs.

I did, surprisingly, enjoy it with the cheap Fender MP P90s.. and I love the Virtual P90. I might swap out the Super D for another Virtual P90, or a better P90 in the future.

    Lots of options.

I am really enjoying this guitar.

Tele + cutest puppy of them all = win. I also dig the idea of the Hipshot bridge on a Tele.

What kind of music do you play with it?

Thanks! I probably would have just used a Fender Hardtail if I could have got the right spacing in black. That being said.. the hipshot bridge is really nice and comfortable to rest on.

As far as music... I am all over the place but lately have been playing much more post/black metal. I have a couple nice Ibanez's that are collecting dust now that this project is done (s5470 is most likely going.. but maybe my galaxy white rg1527m too.. kinda over trems.)

It is pretty versatile. The piezo blended makes cleans really interesting, and with a quick switch, being able to suddenly play "acoustic" through the piezo only rocks. I've been playing some of Agalloch's, "The Mantle" with is as I got all the electronics working.

Pepper Keenan used to use ESP Vipers w/ p90's in the bridge. I bet this sounds pretty good with an overdrive tone. Although his Es-335s with stock pickups sound awesome as well. Might be something to this semi-hollow stuff.
