Sincerely wish EBMM would stop putting black hardware on their coolest guitars, but otherwise these look great, hopefully I can try one out! I’ve loved the other Lukes I’ve tried.

EBMM is really going in with their own pickups judging by this. No EMGs or DiMarzios.
I was surprised quite a bit when the Kaizen came with them. Though, since it was “designed by” as opposed to a sig, I suppose that’s not as out there as I originally thought.

Petrucci, Fluff, and I’m assuming Rabea all have their sigs in n their guitars. Have they updated the Morse models? I don’t recall what Richardson has in his.

The Jason sig uses EBMM pickups.
I'm going to assume Petrucci sticks with DiMarzio since he has an extremely close relationship with them, and has had one since the early '90s.
TBH Luke switching to EBMM pickups isn't surprisng. His DiMarzio endorsement is relatively recent, only had one sig pickup set. Heck it already looks like the transition (pun intended) was happening with the L3 since I'm seeing some with EBMM pickups.

I've always liked the Lukes both in their feel and aesthetics

However the lack of 24 frets and no ebony board to me kill it (for the sparkle I could be talked into a different fretboard)

You're right here. It has always been DiMarzios in the Petrucci signatures (I think even going back to the Ibanez model). Which Dimarzios has a changed a lot over the years. They do seem to be pushing more on OEM pickups. Not just the signature models - but it used to be more frequently the case that if you bought a silhouette it might likely have DiMarzios in it, and it is now more likely OEM. Like most stuff EBMM does, their pickups do sound quite good - they definitely do not feel like a quality downgrade, but they do tend to be more vintage voiced that my preferences.

One reason in general that I tend to gravitate towards signature guitars is that I like high end guitars, but my preference in pickups is different than the average buyer of high end guitars (which in my mind tends to be more the blues lawyer sort). If I buy a high end guitar, it probably has pickups / hardware oriented to the average buyer. If I buy a signature guitar, I can more easily hone in on the type of tone I love. I am not a huge Dream Theater fan, but Petrucci's tone (and playing - but I don't get that with the guitar purchase) is the bee's knees to me.

I own a Luke II, which has the vintage trem and an EMG85/SLV/SLV. The single coils are super stratty, but the 85 is basically a thicker 81 and can do most of the things an 81 can do. This guitar covers a wide variety of ground, and can handle the heavier stuff while also sounding very hendrix-esque on the neck pickup.

Vintage height frets has always been a roadblock to me keeping one of these.

They definitely have this. I am more of a Jumbo frets guy, but I will say that while most things are easier on big frets, the lower height frets allow you to play a little differently. You do not need to be quite as careful with string pressure to avoid sending the note out of tune. There are some things about the feel that are nice. I would not rule it out unless you have already tried one.
