Took my son to see Mario Bros last weekend in 3D and loved it. The 3D wasn't really necessary, but matinees are cheaper than I thought, so I figured splurge the extra 8 bucks. Pretty sure my son saw it again today with his cousin while I'm on my trip in NYC.

No Exit is a 2022 American thriller film directed by Damien Power from a screenplay by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Taylor Adams. It stars Havana Rose Liu as a recovering drug addict who discovers a kidnapping in progress while stranded at a rest stop during a blizzard.

[Note: There are 2 movies with the same title from the same year, it's confusing]
Damn good Horror/Thriller with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Haven't seen a good horror movie in a while now.

Watched an early screening of Evil Dead Rise. I have loved EVERY SINGLE movie, and the TV series leading up to this... and it looks like this one is going to sit proudly next to those when it comes Blu-Ray. It's nice to have been a fan of a series for 27 years and not be disappointed even once.

Last night:
A serial killer's guide to life. British darkly comic drama about a woman spree killer, killing self help coaches. The twist is a tad obvious, and the kills are mostly off screen, so not to bloody, but it was grand.

This way out. A short by same director and Actress from A serial killer's guide. Again very darkly comic, this time, it's about a clinic where suicidal people can go to be euthanized. Except there's two clinics in the same small town and one is trying not to be closed down. Much preferred this one, much punchier

I really want to see the Mario movie, as long as it's got a decently cohesive plot I won't mind. I'm fine if it's basically modern eye candy with nostalgic characters tbh. Like has been said, it's a kid's movie really.

Evil Dead Rise- More in the vein of the Fede Alvarez remake or Evil Dead 2, where the film is more a serious attempt at horror rather than embracing the campier side like Army of Darkness/Evil Dead/Ash vs Evil Dead . The special effects are a blend of practical and cgi, but all of them are entertainingly disgusting. It's pretty impressive when a horror movie actually makes someone as jaded as I am cringe at some of the gore. There is zero fat to trim from the movie, it's 90 minutes of pure carnage.
Alyssa Sutherland chews scenery like mad as Ellie and is fantastic. Nell Fisher is also a standout. She steals most scenes she's in.

Overall I think it's well worth watching.

Huh? You think Evil Dead 2 is less of a comedy than Evil Dead 1? I can see the roughly 5 minutes after the eyeball swallowing and before the portal opens into medieval times as being serious, but not much of anything else besides maybe the couple of overwrought scenes of Ash grieving over the necklace (which are also in the first movie!). That movie's loaded with very intentional humor and even changed all the blood to black and green colors so it wouldn't get in trouble with the censors like 1. Plus it has what's definitely the funniest stretch in any Evil Dead property, with the extended bit of Ash vs his hand.

I usually feel like I'm in a minority for thinking ANY of Evil Dead 1 was supposed to be funny (it definitely was with some stuff like Ash repeatedly getting hit in the face with blood or getting stuck in the bookshelf, or the blood in the lightbulb). That one's a lot more of a straightforward horror movie than 2! Though I'm very curious to hear your reasoning.

Yeah, I never got much of a comedy vibe from The Evil Dead, especially compared to Evil Dead 2. There were some elements that could be construed as funny but not nearly compared to ED2 and Army of Darkness, which at that point, was more comedy than horror. Evil Dead 2 was a more horror oriented movie with some comedy, but I don't remember laughing much, if at all at The Evil Dead. That said, I agree with KnightBrolaire on Rise. Definitely a more serious tone and as someone who isn't bothered by gore, some of the shit in Rise unsettled me. If this is the direction that Evil Dead is going in, I'm all for it.

2 basically opens with his girlfriend getting possessed/decapitated. It's more relentless in terms of pacing and overt horror, which is why I compared Rise to it.
Besides the physical comedy bits like ash drowning in a puddle/fighting his hand/ getting bit by Linda's head/slamming the door on the hillbilly it's not that "funny" imo. Rise has some similar parts that are horrifying but in an almost comedic way. Not to the extent of the Alvarez remake though.

1 always feels goofier to me than 2 even with all the intentional humor in 2. Idk, I never liked 2 as much as the original or Army of Dng arkness.

Neither are really overt comedies compared to Army of Darkness or Ash vs Evil Dead though.

Yeah, but they do it comedically, with the stuff like her headless body attacking him with a chainsaw, or her body dancing around and accidentally losing its head. He decapitates her the same way in the first movie and it is way grosser and less funny (though I think it's kind of funny there when her neck stump starts spraying him in the face in a really over-the-top manner).

I dunno, it just seems like the general reaction from "normies" that I've watched those movies with is the first one is nasty and gross and the second one is hilarious. Only twisted sickos like me think the first one's funny. The tree rape probably didn't help, rape tends to bring almost anyone's mood down even if it's as ridiculous as that. I kind of get what you're saying but I'd still describe the first as a horror that goes so far as to occasionally be funny, much like the remake, which I really like. While the second I have no problem showing to people who are normally grossed out by "straight" horror movies and they usually have a blast.

Army of Darkness I think is trying way too hard with some of the humor (ex the endless scene where he does three stooges gags with the hands coming out of the ground). I still like it, though. I need to watch the rest of the show. I remember liking the first two seasons and was downloading them weekly, but just sorta stopped watching it at some point. It was too hard to watch back when it aired for someone without cable.

achkuualllly, look up Hokusai's Dream of the Fisherman's wife, which is from 1813.

SWEET! TENTACLE PRON I HAVEN...

I mean, um, research material.
I swear, KnightBrolaire is the only person on this forum that would know when the first historical use of tentacles porn was, and I wouldn't even bat an eye and just be like "Yeah, dude knows a lot of random facts. Checks out."

I only know it because I'm a huge fan of Hokusai and Ukiyo-e art.

Eh, I've heard that fact before, it's kind of a popular "fun fact" among nerdy circles. The only actual tentacle porn I ever saw was a VHS tape a particularly nerdy friend showed us way back in the 90s. Angel of Darkness 3 or something. I think it involved a tennis player whose students all wanted to have sex with him, and an evil doctor with tentacles that raped people with them. That VHS tape influenced my opinion of Anime for the next few years and is a large part of the reason why I've never gotten into it.

I remember this playing on tv (either on TBS or ABC Family) almost daily for the whole summer of 2002. And it just happened to come up on my youtube recommendations. I totally forgot Patton Oswalt is in the background of two scenes total.

He talks about that in his first book, "Silver Screen Fiend" funny to hear him talk about that being his legit first acting credit if I recall correctly.

Went out last night to go see D&D Honour Among Thieves and we really enjoyed it! When they announced this last year or whenever, I immediately expected the worst, but then it came out and everyone said it was really solid and had lots of heart, and it still met those expectations. It doesn't necessarily do anything new or novel but it was a really fun ride and accomplishes what it needs to, which is to entertain for 2 hours. Definitely recommend.
