I have a JB in my mahogany Schecter. It sounds pretty good, but it's not amazingly tight and it can be a bit "wooly." I'd want something a little clearer for Periphery. I haven't tried it, but I've heard great things about the Dimarzio D Activator in mahogany. The Crunch Lab sounds just right for that style in basswood, but I don't know how it sounds in mahogany.
In my opinion, the JB sounds best in mahogany. That said, I don't think of it as a particularly Djenty pickup. Not that you could not get there with it since it is probably mostly your amp settings that get you there - but I have to say it has more of a high mid spike to it. If it makes sense, I think you want more of a "mid" mid spike.
JB and Mahogany work together very very well. However, in terms of metal tones its better for the big big lows like gojira uses vs. peripheries really clear stuff. I'd go with a ceramic for more techincal and tight work.
I think you'd really like a BKP warpig. That or a duncan distortion.
I'm with everyone else here. I have it in an alder guitar, for whatever difference it makes, and it sounds amazing for medium gain metal/rock. Through a Tremoverb, it nails thrash tones but isn't really tight enough for what you're looking for.
