Anyone played the MJ SL2? I like the look of the black one with the white neck binding. I generally trust Japanese-made guitars, so I assume it's a fine guitar.

I played one at Matt's Music here outside Boston. It seemed solid. I couldn't find anything to complain about construction-wise. Also, I am a fan of the Gotoh Floyd Rose and it comes with that so that's a bonus.

I would jump at one of these if I didn't already have guitars filling whatever role I'd have for it. If they make a 7 MJ series though, that I will get excited for.

I got to play one when I got offered it as a trade in when I went to a local store trying to get my SV back. It was really light and comfy, fantastic ultra thin round neck, gotoh floyd was solid, fretwork perfect. It sounded really good but also kinda really 80s which threw me off. I didn't want to give up my Ormsby AND A7 for it but it was a great guitar. Definitely upper tier and could hang with the MIJ ESP I went to get. Sadly my MIK stuff felt good enough for me and they both sounded more to my taste and 2 for 1 when you play as much bullshit as I do doesn't feel great unless it's an insane piece.

I believe this was the "better" trem that Pros went out with from 90-92 pretty good price, I can't find a 37mm brass bock for it thought (OFR block won't line up)
this trem besides being very stiff doesn't always come back to perfect pitch
so which of these ?

Schaller is fine, cheaper and more in the right vibe, since the Schaller is basically the JT-590 trem from the Pros but with better intonation screw hole inserts so they don't strip out.

The one I played, also black, had great fretwork and felt like a quality instrument, but there were some fairly tangible finish flaws. Streaking/bleeding on the binding at the neck joint, and what looked like running artifacts under the clear on the headstock.

I don't think they'd stop me from buying the guitar, but they'd definitely stop me from paying full price.

@Emperoff Yea, they're not really my neck style is all. I'd probably just use it for recording and ogling so not worth the ask at the moment. They ain't making any more of them afik, I'd be very surprised if they ever go down much at all again.

Schaller makes the German Floyd's and also make their Lockmeister which is a direct copy of the OFR. The one you ordered is what was the Floyd II bridge which I had in an old Squier and replaced it with a fresh one. I have an OFR brass block and it fits perfectly.

Surprisingly the OFR blocks do not fit the Floyd Rose 7 string 1000 series. At least the one I tried on BC Rich Stealth 7 didn't line up, even though Floyd Rose customer support assured me they fit, after I had tried to install it and when I asked them if they had others that fit.

I had one apart the other day, the spacing for the bolts looks the same to me, and Crooks replaced the block on it with a 42mm before he passed it on to me. All the OFR parts should fit the Schaller, just the base plate is different and the lock screws are shorter (but the same diameter/thread).

Yeah, those are different, probably to keep people from just upgrading the base plate and calling it a day.

The Schaller locking tremolos, both the Lockmeister and the Tremolo, allready come with brass blocks (although standard sized ones). As others above mentioned, Schaller produces the Floyd Rose trems so parts are interchangable.

Dropped by the Axe Palace to play the platinum American Series SL3 they have in stock. Can confirm that these feel great. The lack of binding is more acceptable on a white/platinum finish. Since they have routed the fret slots as if there was binding so you don't see the slots from the side. It basically looks like there's black binding. If you're on the fence, these are solid guitars.

Of course they're pickier than most shops and said there were also 3 others, two black ones and a blue one, that they rejected for some QC issues out of the, I think, 8ish total they've had in the shop. I did not ask what issues they were. However, whomever was working there (it wasn't Nick) indicated that they've sent back fewer of these than the MJs, MIM Charvels, and recent Ibanez Prestiges. Which is nuts.

I found the MJs to be quite good, in my limited experiences with them. And I always have thought that Ibbys are fairly consistent when it comes to high end stuff. However, I guess lots of brands are struggling with QC at the moment. Or maybe the dudes at AP are pickier than I am, and I'm pretty picky.
