It’s come to my attention in another thread that VerticalScope is not/may not be related to the same entity that bought SSO from Alex about a year ago (Enthused Digital). If this is correct, I have a request:

Prior to Enthused Digital, we had a Politics and Current Events (P&CE) subforum that was one of the few places to discuss politics and current events civilly online, in part because the mods had the power to ban trouble makers. When Enthused Digital took over, the P&CE subforum was scrapped because the mods didn’t have the power to ban trolls and other poorly behaving members and Alex didn’t want to deal with it himself (he was still admin at the time). Now that the mods have been re-empowered to do their jobs, can we bring back the P&CE subforum, ideally resurrected from the backups so that the old threads are present and intact?

I am hesitant to bring back political forums only because it really does dilute things and divides the membership, making work for the mods. I can bring it up with the team but I cannot promise I can ad this.

Out there, somewhere
I’ve seen a case where the thread had reaches 22 pages and a mod came along and deleted three or four posts, pushing it back to 21 pages and then locked the thread at 21 pages.

Yep... I think that was the one that I deliberately posted to push it to 22 and then left it locked

Understood, but at the same time, this was legitimately the only civil political discourse (aside from two or three bad apples) that I’ve seen online, and remained so for many years.

The only issue came about when the mods were prevented from doing their jobs. Had they still been able to do them, there would have been no need to close the P&CE subforum.

If I might offer this as a motivating factor: there's a relatively tight group of regulars that are going to be discussing politics anyway (currently "hidden" but not really hidden under innocuous sounding thread titles) - reopening the subsection keeps it contained instead of spilling out into the rest of the site.

No updates to the rules without consulting with the people who are tasked with enforcing them. The argument that it could spill over just means that rules will be broken in the open and then enforcement will have to be taken.
