Hey all, gear lust still strong.

Been craving a Mesa of some sorts - was gunning for a Tremoverb or a MKIV, when a standard DR Rev G (1996, pointy knobs/attached power cord) came up locally for a reasonable price.
it can be mine should I want it.

Tbh I'm pretty stoked to finally own one (and I have a 2001 straight/slant to go with it) BUT, of course, something else pops up a province over, for not that much more (few hundred CAD). It's a Bogner Twin Jet. I've wanted one for a long time as well and have been playing an Ubercab for years, which I love. Am super torn now. It'll be a bit harder to get my hands on a Bogner, but doable.

I've read a ton of threads and listened to a ton of clips for both amps. My bandmate even owned a Rev Blue for a while and it was thick but was lacking something in the mix, tbh. It seems that the Twin Jet is regarded as something of an outlier in the series too, maybe too tight/compressed - less angry or thick. Is the high end really that "grainy"? I know the Recto will have bees up top for sure but it's fine.

So my question to anyone that had a chance to really shake the two out: am I leaving a ton of ton on the table by going with a DR or can it really hang? it seems the Bogner could be "bigger" sounding but the Recto is no slouch. Hopefully, the Rev G will take up more sonic space than the RoV50 I had for a bit.

I'm looking to play some time of death metal in low tunings and am aware of the need to boost a recto, have a few and would get more.

Really, just would love to hear you guys' opinions and musings.
Amps and riffs for life.

Personally, since I'm also in craving-a-Mesa mode, I'd say if you've got a good deal on a good Dual, just get that.

Even within the Mesa camp, the Marks and Rectos do their own thing and can't quite sound the same. I'd get THE sound you want, rather than something close to it. I like the Mark sound a whole lot, but they aren't "big" sounding, per se. Not compared to other sounds.

I would get the rectifier and spend an extra 200ish bucks for a legendary tones hot mod. If I had known about the hot mod, I probably never would have sold my rev g triple rectifier.

I feel that the resale market for the Mesa would be slightly better than the twin jet at the moment.

They’re both high gain. You already know which one you want more, buy that one.

Not really any “leaving tone on the table” either you know how to make the gear work for you, learn how to make the gear work for you, or sell the gear :2c:

Both amps will do low tuned stuff and can do death metal, it's just about what flavor of high gain you want.
Twin Jets are a lot more unique of a sound than a Dual Recto ime. They're also far harder to find than a recto ime. I'd go that route personally.

Huh, maybe I was thinking of a different uber. For some reason I thought they were hard to move.

The Twin Jet version seems to be the least popular version of the Uber.
Yeah I always see people talk about the rev blue, rev green, even the newer Ultra, but everyone skips over the Twin Jet. From what I can tell they made the "clean" channel more gainy and tweaked the presence knob on the high gain channel.

I haven't played the new Uber Ultra, but the Twin Jet is my favorite between it and the Rev Blue/Green. I dont really understand why it gets so much hate. Probably because of the lack of a true clean channel, which is also why I moved mine at the time. I dont even like KT88s and that amp sounds great with them. The first channel gets you more of a hotrodded Marshall grind, while the second channel is very close in voicing to the Blue, but much tighter.

Personally, I'd take the TJ over a Rev G Recto any day, especially if they're close in price. The G was a great amp when they were cheap, now that they're at similar price ranges to amps that cost way more money, I don't really get it. FWIW, if cleans are important, the Recto is maybe slightly better. Cleans on the 2 channel Rectos are not great.

In my old band the guitar player played a Twin Jet through a an Orange 4x12 with V30s (V30s are fucking dogshit speakers omg they're terrible and thin) and then he switched to a 4x12 with 2 EVM12Ls and 2 Celestion Redbacks and it was so rad. I played it a bunch just messing around and it's such a sick amp. He never used any boost and it was tighter and more articulate than any Recto variant I've ever played and it also cleaned up super well. I had absolutely zero issues getting a pretty decent clean tone out of it on channel 1 but I play single coils so if you're a dork and play high output active humbuckers or something it probably won't have good cleans. It doesn't have the high end fizz and the low end flub a Recto has either. I'd pick any Uberschall over any kind of Mesa Recto any time for any sort of mid-high gain tones 100% of the time. If you can play the Twin Jet loud and get the power tubes working and get the depth knob set just right it's 🥵🥵🥵

He ran the Uberschall in stereo with a boosted Matamp GT 150 that was running into an old ass 70s Acoustic 6x12 cab and it was absolutely the best guitar rig I've ever played by far. The amount of punch and volume and low end was crazy and it was really articulate too.

Also I bet the 96 is asking like $2500 whereas a multiwatt will be around $1600 though nostalgia will nostalgia.

Kind of depends on the price difference, but I do enjoy rectifiers quite a bit. My old Rev G was one that I truly regret ever having sold. I liked EL34s in it the best. I think either amp could do what you want! I dunno about the Twin Jet, but other Ubers I thought have a bit of a darker tone to them, which I tend to gravitate toward less for whatever reason.

Hey, thanks for all the replies.

Fwiw, the 96 Dual is 1500 CAD (1100USD) and Twin Jet is 1900 CAD (1350USD). Now you see how I'm struggling with this dillema because they're both fantastic deals and are both amps I've wanted for a long ass time and both seem to do this low-mid girthy thing. Clean channel isn't really a consideration for me. I'd probably setup the Recto for two gain channels anyways.

TJ is a bit harder to get as it is further away and would require a long ass drive at some point - doable but requires some grease, and the Dual is local.

Some amps are objectively better sounding, ie. more depth to the sound, less hiss, etc.

Both the Hot Mod and the Dirty Tree boost for the DR are intriguing but so is the Uber growl.
Would love to get both and run them to compare but just can't swing it.

Good price for either amp, so at least there's no wrong choice

It's been several years since I last played through a Rectifier, but I have to say I love, love, love my Twin Jet. I have it set up as two high gain channels and it handles low tunings with ease. The controls take some getting used to, but you can get a pretty wide range of voicings out of them.

Absolutely the TJ, no question.

The seller for that amp is local to me in BC, he's a solid dude. I'm out his way fairly often, I can help you secure it if need be since the drive from AB isn't exactly quick
