Started listening to it but didn't really feel any kind of "hook" so gonna have to come back later.

Damn, this album fucking RULES.

Probably the best album they've put out (in my opinion) and a high-water mark when it comes to black metal. It very much feels like a Deafheaven album, but it's a more cohesive fusion of all of the elements they've been exploring over the years. It's less of the "here's a shoegaze song" and "here's a black metal song" of their previous albums. And it's a great album experience. The slow songs give way to the more urgent songs in a very satisfying way.

It's also quite metal-leaning, so it should please the purists.

Way better than I was anticipating, best thing they've done since Sunbather. Thoroughly impressed.

Great album. I would've liked to see another album of them exploring the Infinite Granite sound a bit more since I really dug it, but this is so fucking good. Best since Sunbather.

I think this is their best record so far - they learned to be a little bit more concise on Infinite Granite, and I think it made all these songs hit harder/better for it. Will have to catch them on this tour.

I really like some of the songs but so far having a tough time "getting" the album as a whole. I think they could have cut one or two songs for the whole thing to feel more concise. It's weird cause it's a similar run length to most of their records and they are my favourite band! Just can't quite put my finger on it.

Is there any of the dream pop from the last album still?

I was hoping they'd blend the two eras together, but what I've heard is more blackgaze

The single they dropped with clean singing was the only song on the album with it, other than I think one or two lines in the final song

Echoing everyone else's thoughts here tho, my favorite thing they've done since Sunbather although I'm also a big fan of Infinite Granite

I wasn't too hot on the pre-release singles, but a few passing listens of the album have been nice and had some moments that caught my attention. Early impressions are also that of a lesser Infinite Granite.

Was listening to the whole record again in one go on a long roadtrip last night. This record takes me places like almost nothing before, so far easily my AOTY!

EXTREMELY bold statement

I didn't want to listen to this record, but I guess I'm going to have to now, for better or worse.

And after several more listens, I stand by it. And I've listened to a fuckton of black metal. What I appreciate about this album is that Deafheaven manages to push the envelope just far enough while still very clearly being a black metal band. Will it appeal to everyone? Nope, but Deafheaven has always been polarizing. For me, it manages to hit a sweet spot: it's atmospheric, dynamic, has variety without being incoherent, and has some absolutely face-ripping riffs.

I think if some of their previous stuff was a miss for you, this album is still worth checking out. The shoegaze/dream pop stuff (which I personally like) takes a back seat to the metal for virtually all of the record.
