    Hey guys,

Im from Brazil and recently had a terrible experience when importing a EBMM Monarchy Majesty 7 string (it had a backbow that nobody was able fix, thruss rod completely loose [and single action] so no real options beyond returning it).

Given that experience, I will take advantage of going to the US (Chicago) for a company training and would like to try out some 7String guitars so to choose the one for me, but it doesn't look like GC or other stores have a good in-store stock of these guitars...

... any tips on how (and where) I can test different axes while in Chicago? Or generally in the US? (does people just buy online and if they don't like it, they return it?)

    Thanks a lot,
    Leandro

I asked my buddy who lives in Chicago but he's not a gear nerd like me so he didn't know anywhere.

You could order this and have it shipped to your employer's Chicago office.

I have the 8 string version and it is immaculate.

Check out the Chicago Music Exchange. Not a huge selection of 7's, but a fantastic shop. At least worth visiting.

Another option is to order a guitar from Guitar Center and then have it shipped to the Chicago location, and then pick it up. That goes for both used and new guitars.

Good call on the guitar center ordering. You may even be able to call and ask them to have a few models shipped in so you can try and buy one. They're generally pretty good about having stuff shipped to store without you paying beforehand.

Find one on kijiji, meet seller in a music store to try before buying?

CME is candyland, but not sure of their 7 selection. Goodtime music may have one or two.

Last 2 times I was at CME they didn't have a single 7, and the only guitar approaching "modern" territory was a used Petrucci

Yeah as a local, do not go to CME if you are into modern guitars especially anything extended range.

Usually I would to go the Central Chicago Guitar Center (2633 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60614). From time to time, there is a decent selection of 7 strings but not overwhelming. And as stated earlier, CME is great for Gibsons and Fenders, but not so much for 7's.

Sweetwater is about three hours East of Chicago. There are a ton of guitars in stock to try.
