Hey guys! I am looking to swap the JB7 bridge pickup of my Carvin 727 (alder body) for a BKP Black hawk or Black dog. Which one would you recommend? I mainly play djent, so I am particuarly interested in note clarity and separation when playing large chords with distortion.

The following clip will give you an idea of my playing and style:

Your advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

IDK, that sounded pretty good to me. Why you wanna switch?

I'm in a honeymoon stage with a set of BD's I put in yesterday. So no opinion yet other than they're different.

Interested in the BH's also, which is what I was going to put in this guitar. Might still. They jury is still out.

Thanks man, I appreciate the comment. I've had the JB7 for 6 years so I wouldn't mind trying something different. The JB pickup was designed in the 70s, and although it is a great all-around pickup, it may not be the best at balance + note separation in the presence of high gain. I've never tried any BKP pickups but I've read a lot about them.

I should mention that I'm using a 6 string Black Dog in an all mahogany (NO maple cap) set neck LP style guitar.
Tuned to D standard with .11-.54's.

So far, I'm adjusting to the BK phenomena. I've gone through this before with an Aftermath 7.
Takes time to get in touch with what BK's do differently.

I would suggest the Black Hawk, alnico just because alder is already a bright tone wood if I'm not mistaken and you wouldn't want to add more highs. Amazing tone though, are you using an axe fx?

I just looked up the frequency response of the 2 pickups and noticed that the black hawk has significantly more highs than the black dog... Since I have an alder guitar (bright), wouldn't the black dog be more suitable?

Best to ask Tim @ BKP or Zimbloth here.

I can report that so far, I'm not digging the shear amount of mid range these Black Dogs out out.
A bit too narrow sounding for me.
