What's the "best" amp cloner out there these days? I don't care about any other features besides capture accuracy. I have a high gain Marshall copy tube amp that's always breaking and I just want to clone it digitally so I can undermine its monopoly on that tone in my life.

I know of the Kemper, the QC, and the ToneX. I know some of them have trouble with certain amps for certain reasons, but that's about it.

Really I don't know shit, basically. Thanks for any help.

Not sure how fractal tone-match fares but its worth mentioning for the discussion.

ToneX is killer. If you already have a recording interface with a reamp box, it's a no-brainer (if not, buy a used Axe I/O for $150 and you're set). The pedal is great and you get $450 worth of software, plus the pedal with it for $400. Also has the advantage over all the other competition with the fact that you can just use it as a plugin in your DAW and not have to even bother with the hardware at all.

I have both the QC and Tonex pedal/software and I'll be honest, I could just be terrible at setting up gain staging for Tonex (totally possible) but I'm finding my high gain captures to be more accurate on the QC.

I've seen some people say ToneX can't do high gain very well, but I disagree as I have some other user's captures that sound great to me in high gain applications. I just can't seem to dial them in myself vs what I can get out of the QC captures.

YMMV

I havent tried it but have found that any tone matches I've downloaded have sounded great. I have not compared directly to source material but they sound good enough I feel I didn't need to bother!

There are some youtube demos I've seen that were pretty good.. Guy did a Petrucci lead capture that sounded really good and that was on an Axe 2 years ago.

I noticed that it had a hard time getting an accurate capture of channel 2 on the Synergy Uberschall module when I used the cab sim on it. I had to capture it like 4 times at different gain levels until it was right. As a direct capture, it nailed it just fine.

I'll probably snag a ToneX for the price, I'm trying to figure out if it can do captures with just a DI signal- no mics. I don't really want to capture my cab since it's complicated to mic accurately.

Supposedly NAM is a bit more accurate in terms of NMSE, but if you need the pedal it's tonex

This NAM stuff looks pretty thick, but worth learning. I joined their FB group and am watching some tutorials.

Should work fine. I only use DI signals. I keep my amp tones separate from my cabs/mics/IRs except for the occasional integrated analog cab sim that might add something interesting to the mix.

Mooer should be mentioned.

Don’t know where it ranks vs the other mentioned products but I def prefer its amp captures over anything I got from the sims of Boss Gt1000, headrush mx5, Helix and Fractal.

probably not a helpful post haha

Only if you have iOS devices because Mooer still couldn't keep their promise to make the software available to different platforms and their customer service is equally terrible as NDSP's and just like NDSP they prefer influencer shills on YT over their own paying customers. Some people are still waiting for Ocean Machine bugfixes that will never happen.

It's mind boggling really because they're sitting on that "technology" since they came out with those micro preamp pedals 6 or so years ago.
Then they based their whole GE line on this amp capture stuff and released the iOS exclusive software that lets you capture your own amps about 3 years ago and then they just abandoned it while the GE line, the X2 preamp etc. are all capable of loading those profiles/captures.

They could've been the first company that rivaled the Kemper but they just didn't and now with NAM and ToneX being at the forefront of that amp profiler/capture stuff they're not even worth mentioning imo.

I dont agree that Tonex is the best capture device. NAM is a lot better, much more accurate. However, QC and Kemper have a lot of advantages. If Line 6 can add a capture module to Helix, game over for everyone else
