On the first go this new album was way too chill, and low key for the mood I was in. I'm on my 2nd go now (after getting coffee and waking up lol) and it's growing on me a lot more so I went ahead and picked it up.

I'm not sure they're really comparable to the Deftones though as OP said. I've seen that comparison being made a lot about them, but Sleep token to me is more borderline pop/soul metal if there is such a thing. (At least to me anyway. They've been becoming more and more of that) That's not a bad thing either.

Anyway it's growing on me. I just need to be in a chill mood for it, and this week hasn't been chill at all haha. The album seems good though. Mixes are great. Really punchy.

I mean, to me Sleep Token is a pop band first and foremost. There are metal elements thrown in there, sure, but they write pop songs.

I got the Deftones vibes more from the sundowning record (the song Gods is basically a Goon Squad homage ) but I still get those one some of the new songs, Hypnosis for example. And yeah, like someone said it's more like a pop record than a metal record, I still think their core sound is closest to metal. I don't think pop dudes trying to play metal would go for a Meshuggah signature guitar and throw in thall-breakdowns as mean as Higher or at least I find the thought to be quite amusing
But I think a pop record written by metal dudes seems like a good description. And I can definitely imagine some songs being played on the radio and, quite frankly, I wish them all the success they could have!
That being said, I haven't heard the record in one go yet so that's definitely something I'm looking forwards to :yesway:

Also I'm wondering who plays what role in the band, I've heard both that it's a group effort but also that Vessel is the only permanent member of the band and writes everything.

Posting Hypnosis cause it's my fav song so far :wub3:

I've listened to it in a single setting front to back at least 10 times by now. lol (it's kinda easy for me to do that while working since I work from home now)

It's a good album. Definitely potential for mainstream success imho. I threw out it at work on the music thread we have and quite a few people dig it that aren't even metal people. They have crossover appeal for sure.

I REALLY want to know who the drummer is, as whoever it is is like the MVP of the band outside of Vessel. I feel like the bassist may be consistent because most of the live videos I've seen have been a very tall, lanky dude. Guitarist has seemed different a few times though.

The dude is an absolut beast and I love how he goes hard on every track
During the earlier times (Jaws for example) they recorded the drums in the end so he could just jam over it. Don't know how they're doing it these days but recording the drums after everything else was an interesting approach to me. Almost seems like the guitar and bass keep the structure together and the vocals and drums do the fancy work haha

Yeah, I'm not saying they're pop dudes. But I do think they write pop songs with a metal sensibility, rather than the other way around if you know what I mean?

This Place Will Become Your Tomb was my most played album of 2022. Love the songs, love the drummer (I'll be trying to copy his snare sound next time I start getting a song together).

Haven't been able to get into their first album as much for some reason.

The new single is 🔥💯

It`s a bit too early to drop the song of the year already, isn`t it?
Absolutely gorgeous, got shivers when that voice started. Loved the atmosphere, the thall-y but still kinda deftone-y riffs, the contrast of mellow beauty and heavyness. Love it! The last two records are my most-listenend- to for the past years and they`re slowly turning into my fav band ever.
Will see them next week opening for Northlane and Architects and I bought the tickets mainly because of this band

Just wait, apparently another single is dropping in *checks watch* 6 minutes.

EDIT: And there it is

EDIT AGAIN: Holy shit this is heavy. More screaming, double bass, heavy guitars throughout, even a solo thrown in. And then it just goes places in the 2nd half and I'm here for it. Chokehold was great, this is fucking amazing!

Really liking the 2 singles. The last album was a bit of a miss for me, I liked a couple of the singles but the rest of the album didn't do much for me. Hoping that pattern doesn't repeat again!

The almost funky outro of the newest track was a nice curveball

Took me a long time to get into Sleep Token before getting it, including a live show where they were the support that just felt weird and cultist. Which I guess is their whole USP. These two singles are some of their best work though in my opinion.

I am exited for the new album! But I do hope it's a bit more guitar oriented, rather than songs with lots of electric sections with sparse guitar parts. I really enjoy their last album, but it's a lot of waiting for epic highlights in songs, rather than it all being epic front to back.
