The afwayu has a lot of grind and gets very nasty when pushed. It's a good choice.
Nice, I'll try one but I ended up getting a Black Heaven f spaced alnico set and just got them in. I like them quite a bit, though they have an upper mid resonance that pokes through in the current setup. Needs some dialing. Cleans are fantastic though

Distortion is installed. Initial thoughts: Higher output level than the nazgul. Mids are kind of honky/quacky in a modern *dare I say* djenty way at times. Low end is nice and tight/responsive. High end is pretty cutting. Overall clarity seems pretty good compared to the nazgul (which has that low mid bump that can muddy riffs a bit). Cleans are decent. Split and parallel options are basically useless in terms of adding variety to the sound. Parallel does broaden the low end and mellow the highs slightly

Is the Nazgul not more "honky/quacky" than the Distortion? I haven't tried the Nazgul, but that seems to be the main criticism of it.

Not in this guitar. nazgul can definitely have that quality but it's not an omnipresent thing. I've used the nazgul in a variety of other guitars as well, and sometimes the mids end up feeling honky, sometimes they don't.

I can give a more in depth impression of the distortion in a few days after I run it through some different amps.

Do you hear and feel as though you have pronounced and chirpy pick attack on single notes? Max Cavalera had a distortion in his esp viper sig around the time of the Soulfly debut and that’s one album where you can hear every pick

Yeah, it definitely has a lot of upper mids and emphasizes pick attack.

How would you say it compares to an M6?

I recently played an M7 set, and found it pretty much what I was looking for. However, the clips you provided for the SD Distortion sound quite similar. I typically prefer bright sounding pickups with a lot of high-mids and a pronounced pick attack.

The M6 has more of a sledgehammer low end with a lot more low mids. The low mid bump gives it the characteristic lundgren growl. Overall the mids don't feel as vocal as the distortion. It's less hairy in the highs. Drier feeling overall. M series has better cleans. Actually splits decently unlike the distortion. Different vibes to achieve similar goals tbh.

I look forward to see what you say about the Guitar Madness sets. I really liked the Dirty Digits.
