Well I finally tried one and liked it. I went to a local GC to try out the Misha Jackson Strat or whatever it's called. They had an MT15 and the Iconic combo and picked the Iconic on a whim (or because I'm a 5150 whore). It actually sounded quite good.

I was in the enclosed sound/demo room so I might have guessed that helped, but the first time I tried the Iconic (a head) it was in that same room.

Did I like it as much as my Stealth or 6L6 combo? I don't really know as I couldn't a/b them directly but my guess is that I'd prefer either of them over the iconic if I did a/b. Just a guess though. I do know I prefer the 3 channel setup more than the two.

Anyway, I finally feel like, "yeah that's a pretty good amp."

Side note: Misha's sig Strat was fantastic btw.

So, you bought it right?

Time to apply for an endorsement now. Sure you've got all the 5150s, but it'll still be cool.
Nope. And honestly I wasn't even tempted. Don't worry, that's shocking to me too. And hey I'm down to only three 5150s (it'd be two if someone would buy my 6505).
Let’s be honest. It was only ever a matter of time.

Official prediction is @Deadpool_25 gets an Iconic before March 1st.
Are we taking bets? :)
And he sells it 2 months later
If I HAD bought one, that wouldn't be a bad prediction.

I’ve played probably 7 of them at this point, and I gotta say, I like them even more than the 5153. They are just more immediate in response IMO, if that makes sense.

Which makes the "ITS ONLY TWO PREAMP TUBES!!!" outrage even funnier because, depending on your taste, it makes the amp sound *better* for high gain scenarios.

I always found the kerfuffle funny. I’ve been kind of down on the entire 5150 family for a while, but several of the Iconic clips sounded great to me. Better than the others in the family. Played one at GC, and really liked the tighter, sharper, and harder feel.

Well well well… look what we have here… just noticed peeking inside…

TAD red base 6L6 tubes… Could it be part of the magic? 🤔

@amptweaker - are you able to comment on the TAD Redbases? Chosen for availability or sonic quality?

I’ve had an Iconic before with JJs stock if I remember correctly. I think I like this amp better with the TAD Redbases.

The JJ's put out a little more power, so you're probably enjoying the TAD 6L6GCM breaking up a little more. We originally planned(and did) use JJ's but they quickly became difficult to get so we checked out the TAD's. A friend of mine in the industry was using them with success, so we got them in and used them for a lot of the amps built last year.

Lately you kind of take what you can get when it comes to tubes!

Great! Thanks for the info James! Definitely no complaints with these tubes or the amp overall.

There’s a bit of warmth and nice midrange with these it seems. I’ve found in the past JJs a bit brighter and sometimes overly agressive. Maybe that’s the point.
