One more. Made a dual hex screw ceramic pickup, 6.2k dc res. Thicker tone than the V3.
Soundcloud is stupid again and won't let me post comments on the track.
Goes: (full mix) V3 C, V3 A5, V4 C, Emg
(soloed) V3C, V3A5, V2 13kdc, Emg, V4C
Thanks for checking. Well that's a whole can o'worms there. :D Pretty much everything shapes the sound, from magnet type and thickness, type of copper wire and thickness used, how many winds, shape of the screw heads, baseplate material etc. etc.
Now that you've said it, it does kind of remind me of a D-Activator sort of. I like the alnico V, it has more compressed top end and nicer mids. But I wouldn't use it for low tuned metal.
Once I get the parts in the mail, I think I'll start making more of these. I'll just need to figure out the...
PM sent @ThunderUnderground .
One more for the road. Same pickup as previously, just swapped the magnet for alnico 5. Ceramic has more 100Hz, and the mid peaks are slightly lower than on the A5.
Made another new pickup, everything else the same as the previous one but 42AWG wire, 6.4k DC. Maybe not so surprisingly this one has a tighter low end and less low mids.
6.4kDC 42 AWG vs. 13.4kDC 44AWG. 44AWG has more 100Hz and more 200-400Hz, plus more fizz at 12k.
The more I listen to it the second one seems to work really well in a mix. I'll need to do a couple more test pickups to see how a lower wound pickup works, and a really overwound.
It's very early days still, figuring stuff out as I go. These were the pickups I had handy. I think low wound pickup would sound extremely shrill with the pre as it is now. But I'll try all kinds of combinations of course once I get the pickups done.
Different pickup, same preamp. The previous one had way too much low end. Made a completely new pickup so I can adjust the height better. The one I used previously had a base with long legs.
6000 winds of 44 AWG wire, 13.4k DC resistance. Ceramic magnet, hex screw pole pieces.
I think the loose low end is mostly because the pickup is too close to the strings, the height is not adjustable on my guitar/test rig.
I'll need to raise the bridge and shim/tilt the neck more to get it right.
This humbucker is a bit bass heavy too, without the preamp, so it could be just...
For di tracks, a di box. It'll get much more for you buck. Like Radial pro rmp. Then, if it doesn't help, Audient or Steinberg make good interfaces. But in that price range changing the interface will be a lateral move at best.
