I've been trying to put up a couple NGD's on the site here but am completely ignorant as to how to put pictures on the site. I get the "file is too large" notice and then give up. Rather than compressing the file or whatever I would otherwise have to do what would a good image hosting site be? I see a lot of people hosting or Imgur but also a lot of people telling those people to cut it out so....

I've been using flickr, but that's only because I've yet to make the leap to Google photos or some other host.

Avoid Photobucket. They recently cracked down and no longer allow linking with their free account. You have to pay if you want to actually link to photos you have hosted there.

I've just been hosting on the forum, which is probably against the rules and requires pretty low res photos, but it works.

Ever since photobucket blocked external hosting I've been trying to find an alternative but haven't been able to easily get Google photos or Flickr to work effectively.

Photobucket was garbage even when they were free. Terrible aggressive redirect ads, really slow ui. And yet I kept coming back.

I dunno if we still have it with the new forum software but we used to have "attachments" that worked pretty well. I've gotten used to just using my own web hosting to serve images. It's not ideal for a number of reasons, and not really helpful here, but it's technically an option.

I'm starting to think the best long-term solution to image hosts dying or blocking hot linking would be to buy my own domain solely for hosting images.

Does anyone else do this? How much does it cost?

I know my company buys data storage from Amazon and I've seen people posting pictures from those domains so I guess they must also do personal accounts.

Remember that the domain on its own is just the name, you need hosting to go with it.

It's going to vary, but I spend about $5/month for hosting from one of those VPS services. Domain name adds maybe $20/year. You could probably find something cheaper if you dig around for it.
