Guitarists are convinced that the sheen of finish effects tone.

That's the kind of stupid we're working with.

I'm frankly surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I haven't dipped into the custom guitar world but I've been here long enough to see people extremely satusfied from reputable builders (Daemoness and Waghorn come to mind) as well as all the horror stories. BW were some of the few that actually gave me GAS, and he wasn't a European builder and had decent prices, so he was within the realm of me actually becoming a customer. I don't recall too much of what happened with him but I know he just fell off the face of the earth. Don't remember if there were people in the queue that got screwed or not.

I think it's just a matter of one dude makes/prototypes/markets a product and way more people see it and get interested in it than "one dude" has the labor capacity or labor ability to deal with

Doesn't help when one dude is only really good at 1/3 of those at best.

Hell, one could argue that it's happening in real time again in the Abasi guitars thread. Third builder in nearly as many years and every speed bump along the way has earned as many excuses.

Am I alone in wondering why this was ever even an issue to begin with? How would this have even been 'swallowing his pride' in the first place?
I remember watching this piece unfold in real time and being absolutely gobsmacked that he didn't bring them in. He got more business than he could manage himself so he needed help. That's literally indicative of a successful business. All he had to do was deliver the product, which people were trying to help him with, and once he got that figured out, he could have made a serious name for himself.

I still don't get it. There would have been no egg on his face whatsoever from accepting the help. Of all of the sketchy luthier stories, this was the one that bugged me the most, because imo, it was 100% unnecessary and I can't even think of a justification for it after putting myself in his shoes. At least for BRJ / Marty / the other disasters, if I looked at things from their perspective, through a filter of "doing the right thing is not always the best decision," I can kind of at least see why they did it. Darren though...that's a major headscratcher. Still.

Being too proud or egotistical to accept help is always puzzling. Guess what- failing outright isn't exactly going to be greater for one's pride, either.
