Edit: and lol as we speak, there is an M1 sitting in guitar center’s used section for $899. Lol hopefully it’ll be there next month

If you have a tele, play metal on that. Save your $$ for something else.

I did see the Jericho link above and I got excited. I clicked and was let down by the headstock. I have been cursed to have really specific taste in headstocks, and really only like the ESP Blade, Jackson AT1/in-line pointy, Mayones Duvell and some boutiquey ones like Daemoness/Sully. I see you found an M-1 in GC used, I say go for it :)

I believe Jericho operates much like Dingwall does for their NG-2. They source their woods, send them to WMI in South Korea, have the body, neck, etc. made, sent back to Texas, and then everything is put together and QC'ed. (I believe this to be true but may not be entirely accurate as I'm going off of flawed memory)

They're not well known and I've never played any of their guitars (I can't even remember where I heard of them), but every review online seems pretty solid so far.

It’s a squire affinity, so it really isn’t too reliable quality wise. I bought it cuz I’d never owned something with single coils and meant to upgrade it but never did. I considered just modding it but the frets are really small and the neck shape it really deep so it just isn’t easy or comfy for me to play.

Whats not reliable about it? If you are just playing at home, a set up and you should be ok. I say that with a 25yo squier affinity in the basement haha.

Look out for the blacktop teles and strats.

The intonation is off a lot of the time, which isn’t the worst cuz I can fix it but it just the little holes to adjust the saddle heights are kind rough so my little Allen wrench gets stuck so lol that is just annoying. Also I feel like the strings don’t get low enough to the fretboard before the saddles start to rattle and kinda buzz. The tuning is fine now that I put locking tuners on but other than that the electronics are scratchy when I move the volume up and down.

If the neck was one I liked I would prolly just trade out the electronics and the bridge, but I don’t really wanna upgrade something that doesn’t feel great while playing it, if that makes sense

Everything you mentioned can be fixed with a good setup though. The action may not get super low and theres blues guys who can outshred some metal guys while playing jazz boxes. Hell Werstler can outshred most on a jazzbox.

Well it's not like the affinity series are testaments to high quality or anything. They can be good, but they can also suck. It's entirely possible one of you got one of the better ones, and the other got a stinker.

But I don’t think the neck will become more comforatable with a good setup?

The new contemporary Tele HH looks pretty good OP and will 100% likely have a better neck than an Affinity

Yeah, if the frets are too small for you, nothing short of a refret will change that, and that's an expensive proposition for a cheap project guitar.

I mean you could have a decent luthier reshape the neck or you could do it yourself (if you know what you're doing) but it's probably not worth the effort when you could swap a different neck on.

I would say the hype around the RGA121 is real. I owned one and was EASILY one of the best guitars I have played on. I regret selling it but I had some other gear failing me at the time and it held the best trade value. I am looking forward to obtaining another one in the near future....:mf666:

Epiphone makes a black 1984 explorer which comes with EMG 81 and 85 pickups, you would just need to hit the neck with some steel wool to satin up the gloss finish and you'd be in business.

Explorers are obviously the coolest choice, but that black metal single cut is pretty ruling as well, good luck on your search.

I’d seen that one and was considering taking a look to see if one was local to try out :)

Right on. Hopefully you can try one out. I have perma explorer gas cause Im a Coheed and Cambria fanatic. However even without that they are super comfy and a blast to play.
Just have to be careful going around corners. :p
