So I've had this for a while. At the time I needed a 7 and the budget was way tight:

Bog standard Ibanez Gio 7221 7-string. Horrid pickups, shit hardware and intonation isn't the best. I was thinking of defaulting to loading it with Black Winters, little bit of setup work and leaving it at that - however I thought instead, this time letting you guys, the SSO community choose the mods for this one. Everything is up for discussion, including and not limited to:

    - Finish
    - Hardware
    - Frets
    - Pickups

Recommendations can either be troll worthy or serious. Have fun guys! :)

    Oooh,

Route out a tremolo system cavity and install a floating trem with a brass block. I love the sound you get out of a guitar with springs in it!

fill the pickup ring holes, glittery black finish, put spacers in the bottom of the pickup routes so you can go direct mount with your pickups. Maybe some Suhr vintage hot or just Suhr vintage 7 str pickups.

But imho, those older, mid-range ibanez necks often lack the build quality one would look for when making serious upgrades to a guitar. Building a new neck for it ( if you have the tools ) might be the extra effort it takes to make it into a bad ass music machine.

This is scarily close to what I was thinking, with white bobbin covers and the Seymour Duncan BW logo in Pink haha.

I like it, I like it - Class!

A floating trem would be cool! I actually don't have any 7s with floating trems at the moment (and all my 6s have floating trems, work that one out haha). I like the idea of direct mounts.

Surprisingly if there's one thing that's actually not too bad QC wise on these Chinese RG's it's the neck. The fretwork can be utter cancer but the finish and the profile of the neck is actually pretty good (maybe I've just lucked out with this one).

Hipshot headless hardware, hack off that headstock, cut down the body into something sexy, black winters, matte purple finish with a small black burst edge

Locking tuners is mandatory. Maybe a new nut also.

Put in there some Graphtech piezo saddles and preamp -> add one mini switch and battery routing (wont fit with the rest of things planed ahead).

Pickups to your personal taste. Personally, I'm down for low string pull ones, so AlNiCo 5 is my momentary thing. Other than that, I'd go for some DiMarzio's Blaze Neck + Custom OR Air Norton + D-Sonic (AN with screw poles facing neck, DS with bar facing neck).

    4way tele switch for
    • neck
    • neck+bridge parallel mix
    • neck+bridge serial mix
    • bridge
4x mini switches to copy Seymour Duncan's TripleShot rings circuitry.

Express yourself on that blank white canvas and ditch those pickup rings. Glow in the dark paints will work wonderfully over a white base.

Enjoy a brutal sounding guitar with LOADS of tonal options. You'll be able to choose from:
    • any of the 4 single coils,
    • almost all 2, 3 or 4 coil combos
    • inner or outer coils in parallel or serial
    • all coils in parallel or in serial
    • both hums in parallel but serial mix (unusual combo)
    • both hums in serial but in parallel mix (most common)
    • 3 coil combos in parallel/serial/mixed connections (very unusual and cool sounding combos.
    • Double the tonal options adding Piezos to the mix: mags and piezo mi have lots of potential for pretty interesting low and high gain dirt settings, lots of different grain textures. Piezos + neck single sounds awesome, btw.
    • possibility to emulate an acoustic guitar.
    Cons on this setup:
    • expensive with the piezos, but that can be done over the time, not at once
    • takes some time to project tone changes in one go.

Fabric top. I vote for a Japanese washi paper, or similar. Keep the sides and back white, and do a red, or other colored binding. Swap out pups and knobs for colors matching.

    Now we're talking!

I really like this idea, although I'd probably end up out-weebing the internet by covering it in some mech/cyberpunk anime.

I'd be on this, except I hate the idea of anything even remotely relic'd.

Headless Wizard? One does not simply headbang into Mordor. Like the idea!

I can confirm that regardless of what ends up happening, locking tuners and a new nut are happening. Tuners for convenience, nut to actually make it playable. I like the idea of turning it into a swiss-army knife tone monster.

This with sticker bombs and suddenly I'm 12 again. Time to patent the Fountain of Youth haha.

Now that would be elegant. Would you do the same fabric over the headstock as the body with a contrasting coloured Ibanez logo?

y'know, that's a great idea. You could get pretty symbolic with using Japanese patterns on a vintage Ibanez. I have a fujigen 1999-2000 7 string that I modded with a friend of mine a while back. OP i vote for this for the aesthetics of the top.

Yes, that would be awesome! But definitely do the HS. I think it would be a let down to do a black HS. You could do a solid color, but that could be tricky, stylistically. But matching is always a win.

I think we have a winner for the finish.

Side note, anyone know where to order individual Gotoh tuners from? I've resigned myself to having to buy an inline 6 set plus an extra for the 7th but I can't seem to find anywhere that sells them individually.

They sell them in 7 string sets, though, don't they?

Black or gold Evertune bridge. Locking tuners. Single coil pickups slanted in the humbucker holes
