Sometime around 2005/2006 I went into sludge/stoner pretty hard and stopped paying attention to the rest of metal.

I want to get back into it, but I'm basically 12 years out of date and have no idea where to start. It finally sank in when I was looking at new albums that and realized I was looking at stuff from 2004 and I have no fucking idea beyond that.

So... make some suggestions. I'm going to drop everything into a playlist and listen to it until I'm sick of it... then I'll ask for more.

Hmm... I've tried to keep this largely pure metal only, which is not the majority of my listening really. If you don't mind some country, prog, hardcore, jazz or hiphop thrown in, I could list considerably more.

    Psycroptic - The Inherited Repression
    Decapitated - Blood Mantra
Testament - Brotherhood of the Snake
    Gorguts - Colored Sands
Man Must Die - Peace Was Never An Option
Misery Index - The Killing Gods
Napalm Death - Apex Predator (Easy Meat)
Ulcerate - The Destroyers of All
    Revocation - Deathless

Thanks. Just picked up the first three albums on the list and will work my way down as I get paid.

Yeah, I'd like it kept to metal, any sub-genre, preferably produced in the last decade.

    Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
    Textures - Silhouettes
    The Ocean - Pelagial
    Cynic - Traced in Air
Destrage - Are you Kidding Me? No
    Extol - S/T

12-13 years is a lot to go through, but that'd be a great start for me if I had never heard those albums. Good luck

Personally I'd choose Organic Hallucinosis or Carnival If Forever by Decapitated! Lots of great suggestions here though.

Grab everything by Soilwork and In Flames. Two awesome metal bands.

Due to the sheer breadth of this question I'm just going to go out on a limb and start listing some random bands in no general order:
    ● Obscura - Cosmogensis (Tech Death)
    ● Spawn of Possession - Incurso (Tech D)
    ● The Contortionist - Language
    ● Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution
    ● The Faceless - Planetary Duality (Tech D)
    ● Black Crown Initate- Selves We Cannot Forgive
    ● Soreption - Engineering The Void
    ● Virvum - Illuminance
    ● Goreguts - Pleiades' Dust
    ● Artificial Brain - Labrynth Constellation and Infrared Horizon (both great dissonant death metal)
    ● Dodecahedron - Kwintessens (BM)
    ● Schammasch - Triangle (BM)
And plenty more I'm having a difficulty recalling at this moment. You're going to have an amazing time discovering all the progressions each respective genre has made. I hope the list helps!

Ne Obliviscaris - Portal Of I
Altar Of Plagues - Teethed Glory And Injury

Those are the two best releases of the last 15 years. I won't give any more recommendations, from there you will find your own way.

    +1 for Altar of Plagues
    +1 for Artificial Brain
+1 for Gorguts, Colored Sands is beyond impressive, and their EP is great also

Hate Eternal's newest is the best thing they've done since I, Monarch, which was 2005

Wormed made a couple new albums since back then, too

Honestly though, in very recent times, hardcore bands have taken over the realm of extreme.
    -Code Orange
    -NAILS
    -Plebeian Grandstand
    -Sunlight's Bane
    -Full of Hell

These bands are all taking off, and I'm loving it. I was always a fan of crustcore bands like Martyrdod or Remains of the Day, and now we have all these excellent bands starting to step up and fill the gap between crustcore, grindcore, and death metal.

Essential if melodic death metal sounds even remotely appealing to you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Going to take me awhile to work through it all. Really digging Psycroptic and Decapitated. Pretty impressed with the clarity in these recordings.
