Headstock of My 'Malleus Maleficarum' Cimmerian. Not long to wait now.
kind of thinking about switching my body shape to a warrior esque body.
Yea man - warriors are great. Look fantastic and are super comfy. Not 100% sold on such a coarse notebook sketch but seems like there could be some potential there.
I'm thinking something like this with a trans blood red finish and black binding, provided dylan can even find a big enough burl top. If not then I'd go with a plain maple top and have him do a bunch of body art.
Think the odds of a 1-piece figured sheet spanning from corner to corner on an x-shape are pretty low. I have one, but was basically told it was a "once in a lifetime" piece that I couldn't order (then bought it used). A bookmatch would be doable though, but if that's a carve top (not sure how 3D to assume the bevels are) I'd advise against it -- tonally you don't want a thick burl top on there -- I'd make it just a couple mm thick.
Yeah I'm just playing around with some ideas. It's hard enough finding flamed maple tops that can cover an explorer, I don't really want to imagine how hard it'd be to find decent burl at that size. I guess a veneer over a plain top could work if I'm deadset on a burl top (which I'm not atm).
hmm a death kelly body would be pretty sick
I think your best bet would be no top so you can go crazy with the design without being restricted.
that was the original plan with the explorer, just let the body art do the talking, but now I'm contemplating just going with a fretboard inlay and a decent figured top. It'd be a bit less busy.
Looks amazing man! I've been watching the progress of this. Interesting how he went with white instead of black for the name.
Thanks!! Yeah, think it gives it a bit more contrast, black maybe would have got lost a little
too much considering the artwork on the headstock.
I think that's a killer looking design! Burl top sounds epic. Whilst you may not get a one piece I'm sure Dylan can work something....guy's just so talented. I think he enjoys challenges like this.
thanks. I'm going to keep tweaking the design (mostly that back horn). I'd be fine with a 3pc top or something if I do go the burl route. I think burl with a PRS styled fire fade would work really well for a hellish vibe if I don't just go with body art. No matter what I'm sure dylan will nail the whole Ragnarok/end of the world theme I want.
Holy! If he pulls that off and I've no doubt he will that guitar is going to totally slay!! I'm intrigued as to how this is gonna turn out when you guys get your heads together.
