I was actually pretty caught off guard by Spit Out the Bone, cause I had started listening to Hardwired and gave up on it pretty early. Then the one song popped up randomly on Spotify, and... I didn't hate it.

I'm ok with DM and Hardwired. I don't rate them as classic or innovative metallica albums at all. I only listened to them once or twice. I don't like them but also don't despise them like st anger. They are fine for what they are. A mature band loosening up and having fun belting out tunes in a style that made them popular to begin with. There will never be another KeA, RTL, MOP or AJFA. They're all freaking billionaires now that have done everything there is to do. They have no reason to hate the world or be pissed off at "the man" anymore. The same motivation and inspiration just isn't there anymore. Not to mention James's balls dropped in the 90s so he will never sing like the old days. I don't know if Kirk has severe arthritis or just gave up on playing solos but he's obviously never going to write a good solo again.

So to me DM and Hardwired seem like an honest effort to be themselves and not contrived crap trying to fit in with whatever's popular at the moment like st anger.

I thought it was common knowledge that the country stuff came from James entirely? Ex, Mama Said.

Haha. I like a few songs on St Anger. The title track is not one of them.

While every other Metallica album before it, and even Death Magnetic and Hardwired would beg to differ, it's still a better album than Lulu.

I remember reading in a few Guitar World articles that James put "the blame" on Lars and Kirk when it came to art direction and visual presentation. Like the Serrano pictures for album covers, group shots, etc. Also, just because James wrote most if not all of the material doesn't mean he was the only one "green-lighting" the songs. If Lars and Kirk were in a re-inventing, experimental phase they may have okay-ed some songs that they wouldn't have otherwise just for the sake of shaking things up.

Back in the 80s, Metallica were the best metal band on the planet.
Since the 90s, Metallica were one of the best hard rock bands on the planet.
Now that Acca Dacca is no more*, Metallica is the best hard rock band on the planet.

    * Don't bring up the nonsense that Angus is about to do with A. Rose.

    I stopped reading there...

Does it really matter where an interview comes from? James himself said what I was talking about. I don't remember the particular media outlet.
