want to use drop G# on my 8 string but the lowest string be an octave lower.

just for some extra BOOOOOM on open chugs or "djenty" After the Burial type riffs.

Thinking some cool open tuning like

    G#,(0)G#(1), D#, G#, C#, G#, C#, C#,

the top 2 strings are the same octave for a chimey style.

if I wanted to pull this off just for some fun, what gauge would I need for the G#0?
    something crazy like 130.+?

If the G#0 is too low and wont work, whats the next lowest from G#1 I can tune, so that I can still use bar chords and include the low and it works?

Check out the Kalium string tension calculator. http://store.kaliumstrings.com/TensionCalculator/tensionChart.php?scale_length=27

It looks like somewhere around .150 to .182 would work (assuming I'm in the right octave).

I haven't tuned that low on a 27" instrument, but at 30" or 32" you start getting into long spans, requiring increased tension, like a bass. So at 30" I usually go for 30 lbs or more. You might be able to get away with less at 27".

    haha you are probably right.
What can I have my 8th string tuned to, so that barred chords will still work, if the rest of the guitar from 7th string down is Drop G#? (I know nothing about theory lol)
I suppose I could just sit tuning a low down note at a time until I find something that works.

you could do a double drop tuning (ie D#1 for the 8th string).

that'll be a bit tight tensionwise (prob 25lbs) but yeah it'd work.
