For some reason, I am equating this thread with the fact that I am a child of the 80's and therefore LOVE Bon Jovi and Poison.....yet the musical style that comes out of me is black and death metal.

I thought that album made fans get mad because it was a departure from the metalcore-heavy/less radio-friendly style of their first two albums and that Shadows did much less screaming in it compared to those two.

I also quite like Syn's guitar tone in this, it shows that the Duncan Invaders can actually sound clear and not muddy and bassy as most people make out to be.

I was really into CoE but when the self-titled came out I seemed to prefer that one in almost every way. I liked the more varied soundscapes, better mix and tones, a little bit more consistent songwriting as well. Some songs on CoE had so many parts (Burn it Down ) that I sometimes struggled to remember which song I was listening to, since every song had like 17 bridges.

But yeah, great album. Very much an "I listened the crap out of it for a while and then never again" album for me though. The Danny Elfmanhead in me loved the ending songs though, absolutely loved them.

That album was a shred/thrash masterpiece. It’s amazing, and “true cvlt metalheads” just dislike the band’s image.

It was a guitarists album chock full of “how many complex parts can we put in a song” hype.

However the main guitarist and songwriter “admitted” afterwards that those songs were a bitch to play live, and it seemed they got tired of that style pretty quickly.

They can fucking write/play when they want to though.

Saw them at Warped tour and on the city of evil tour they were amazing live. Shadows even sounds less whiny too

I haven't listened to this album in ages, the guitar playing and drumming is great but Shadows voice can get very fatiguing. The self titled album after was a bit improvement.

The great thing about COE was that they were becoming both more catchy and more sophisticated at the same time.

Post-COE, the former can be said but not the latter.
