The Mesa STR440 6L6GC is the same as the Ruby 6L6GCMSTR (in fact I think Mesa buy them from Ruby). I put a set in my recto and I can confirm they’re really good sounding. The old tubes they replaced were pretty shot though.

I apologize in advance for the minor threadjack. I have a guy interested in trading me a multi-watt for my LP Studio Deluxe. The guitar is mint, and I know it’s a decent deal for me, but I have a Rev G 2 channel. My question is, is it worth it for me to trade and have two dual recs? Are they that much better? I don’t really wanna ditch my 2 channel, I like having an “old school” Mesa around.

Yes. I’ve owned several sub-200 serial # Rev C and sub-500 serial # Rev D Duals/Triples... which kill the Rev G... and I prefer my Triple Multi-Watt over all of them by a decent margins.

I keep reading the multi watt is the best recto ever made. I'm so glad I own one. I've been through so many different amps (including the single recto, which did not sound very good in comparison), but the reborn recto has ended my search. This amp can do everything!

Thanks for the help guys. I plan on picking the one up and will more than likely use the suggestions in this thread for tubes as well.

Just did the tube swap. Holy F@#$! This amp just turned into a grizzly bear on steroids! The difference is night and day in both sound feel. It suddenly sounds tighter, and more aggressive. The hiss from the modern mode pretty much gets obliterated when selected to 50watts. Thanks again for the recommendation!

Dude, you HAVE to go with the 6l6 metal kit from Doug's Tubes! It's unreal how much better my amp sounds with those tubes.

Arguably the most aggressive amp I've ever played. I keep bouncing back between the Vintage and Modern modes. I'm not quite sure which one I like more. Vintage can get heavy as hell.

It's unreal how those tubes combined with the 50w setting practically eliminated the fizz from the modern mode, while making the overall sound of the amp much, much better. I feel like everything is more useable now. I remember spending hours tweaking my single recto, but the multi watt is just effortless, especially with this new tube set. I don't think I've ever been this content with any amp.

Quick question though. Are channels 2 and 3 the exact same? Sure seems like it.

Also, do these amps really need a boost? I feel like the modern mode is already tight enough.

Same here, I have new power tubes in my recto and they were a great improvement. I still have the old preamp tubes in it, previous owner replaced them at some point but no idea how much wear is on them. After all mine is around 15 years old so they might be ancient.

It has tungsol v1, tad (Chinese 9th gen) for the rest, except PI which is the original ‘Russian 2’ Mesa tube.

The thing is if I retube I was probably just gonna go with those exact same tubes, maybe I should also pick up a JJ or two, for some variety.

I have my multi-watt on its way to me. Supposedly the guy I am getting it from just re-tubed it, I will have to check and see what he put in.

IIRC the only difference between them is the value of the presence pot on the red & orange channels. I like to keep orange on vintage and red on modern.

AFA a boost/od... not mandatory... but adds another flavor and dimension. Any decent Maxon OD808 etc will sound work great. Nothing fancy. With the right settings they kick but, but need to be dialed in. Just not a plug and play amp with the most often used settings.

Got a chance to crank it tonight. It totally destroyed the drummer, and that was with a 2x12 cab. I dimed the master output and went about half way on the channel volume. I had to stop there because I thought the earth would blow up.

I dislike the tung sol in v1 in a recto. I know many rate it but I find it kinda sterile and harsh sounding and i have tried 2. the gold pin and the standard

el34 vs 6l6 I like the el34 in high gain . they make a much more mix ready sound IMHO , but I don't like what they do to the clean channel so I stick to 6l6
