Not talking about pedals designed specifically as high-gain preamp pedals, but distortion pedal that have a wide-enough tonal sweep that they could pull double duty as a preamp if you wanted them to.

    Amy come immediately to mind?

Also does triple duty as a boost.

BE-OD is meant to just be a distortion pedal but works well into some power amps as a preamp. It’s loud for a distortion pedal but doesn’t have as much volume on tap as any of my other preamp pedals.

I didn’t really like it into my 2/50/2 (it sounds like a distortion pedal direct into a poweramp) but into my recto’s power amp in modern mode sounds really good.

The Diezel pedals will fit into your needs perfectly. \they're designed as distortion AND preamp

Wouldn't that really be... any distortion pedal?

No. Most distortion pedals sound horrible as preamps. Unless, that is, you enjoy the sound of a cabinet in the other room with the door closed.

@Ola Englund did a video demonstrating that and it sounded great. I actually have one on the way. I don’t even need it; I’m just curious how it sounds through the Katana 100 lol. I’ll have to try it into the front and into the FX loop.

Is there a reason you're specifically disqualifying pedals that are designed to also be a preamp?

The Carvin Legacy Drive and X1 pedals are both drive and preamp pedal, and both have cab-voiced outs. The X1 even has a 5-band EQ, built-in effects loop and a 1w power amp.

Also, both are now sold through Sam Ash...so while even if you don't like Sam Ash, as least you have whatever protections come from dealing with a giant corporation, you could get an extended warranty, and are more likely to have someone to talk to in case Carvin folds again.

$450 for a Carvin preamp pedal...

Didn't the amp itself cost $500?

The last X100B was I think $1,100 for the head. Back in 1988 it was $569 (in current dollars, that would be $1180-$1250, depending on the month of 1988 you go with)

The first Legacy launched at $799 almost 20 years ago, through to about 2005. I'm not sure what the Legacy 3 went for, but I *believe* it was $899 ($926 to "upgrade" to the green covered model).

Yeah, I don't understand why Verellen pedals or the Mesa V-Twin aren't allowed to be on the list

The Revv G3 has the most “real” tube like distortion I’ve ever heard out of a pedal.

In his demo he ran it as a preamp, into Satan fx return.

Legit tones, I’d love to get my hands on one.
