    Hi...

    So...

Several weeks ago I contacted Cosmo Music asking if I could pricematch a pair of EMG 81-7s to add to my Jackson JS32-7. After bickering with some of the other members in this site for a while, I decided to take it upon myself to find someone with a milling machine.

What used to be a plan for that turned into seeing if I can get the DiMarzio D Activator 7 set for the same price of $218 I already paid to Cosmo Music (although at this stage I still partially wanted to stick with the 81-7s).

Mel over at Cosmo Music was kind enough to swap the order at my request and the D Activator 7 set arrived at the post office.

    This is the result:

@bostjan Hrmm... you know what? I might not have to look for another pickup set ever again.

Special thanks to Cosmo Music for their excellent customer service and a pair of pickups that turned out to be capable of growling even meaner than my 89s at times! Don't let the fact that they are passive pickups fool you, these pickups are DANGEROUS. They're beyond recommendable and they're the very incentive to make me want to grab the guitar more than once a day.

SPECIAL NOTE: Installing the D Activator set on the JS32-7 was quite doable, but the main problem you will experience is that the outer corners that guard the screws will have to be filed down by a very slight touch just so that the pickups can fit in the cavity. File down too much and the pickups will lose power. Other than that, as long as you have the right screws and springs, definitely a huge worthwhile upgrade.

For those of you who are dying to know, it's the DiMarzio D Activator 7 Bridge (DP720) in the bridge position and the DiMarzio D Activator 7 Neck (DP719) in the neck position, but that should go without saying...

So I've underestimated @bostjan's tastes... I'm an idiot (no sarcasm)...

I actually thoroughly enjoyed that song save for the god awful screaming.. but I’m a crotchety old fuck

How do you find the response of the d activator? I always found they sounded nice but the dynamics were just “blah”

The dynamic ranges are actually a bit more scattered than that of the EMGs (I had 85s in another guitar before, now I have 89s). They're a good middle-of-the-road between regular passives and full-on active EMGs (although I actually prefer the latter).

@InCasinoOut I hate to say it, but you're actually right! My days of gain chasing are over! T3T

There's another song that I did over the holidays that is also in Drop G, and in that one I actually made use of the same set to their full potential.

Again, definitely a worthwhile upgrade. The leads actually sing better in these than the 89s, I find, which is actually very odd. O_O
