    Hi Everyone!

My all time favorite album is Gateways to Annihilation from Morbid Angel.

I'm just curious, what do you think about the guiter tone of this album, how would you describe it?
I mean, it's not high gain, dark, kinda sludgy, right?

I know they used Rat boosted Marshalls. But since it's not a super Hi-Fi, super tight, focused tone, kinda ugly, a high-end amp isn't recommanded, I guess.

Any tips, ideas, how to get a similar sound?

    Thank you for your input!

I bet a rat boosted marshall will get you there.

Seems like a troll-y response, but you spelled it out right there.

I wish I dared play death metal with so little gain.

Tips on to get that sound... on a budget?
No offense to Morbid Angel but, it sounds like they used guitars with really old strings into lower-gain amps.

If you really dig this sound, roll back the tone knob and play into any Marshall practice amp with the bass cranked higher than necessary. Or at least that’s what it sounds like to me. Not a lot of crunch, not a lot of high end, mid range is present enough to be heard. And maybe i just perceive more bass because there’s less presence in the high end

Does it matter that they used 9-56 gauge strings with A# tuning?
That's probably flabby, I use 10-63, and I don't feel that super tight.

I read once that Trey uses/used a Rat into another Rat into the clean channel of his Marshall. And they're like special rack-mounted Rats.
