Could I get some constructive criticism on my mix?

Hey everyone, so this will be the first time I ever show anything I've written/recorded, but hell better late than never. I'm a bit new to audio production, but I am trying my best to train my ear right now. I have the right equipment, I just lack the skills.

This song isn't 100% fully finished yet and the recordings were a bit rushed. It was more of a way to mix, not a good take. If I could get some constructive criticism on how the recording sounds, that would be awesome. Thanks!

It was set to private, should be good now. Also the second link, not the original.

Nice song, dude! Try bringing up the guitars a little more. Also is there any bass on the track?

Thank you! Yes there is. It's two bass tracks, one for the highs with an OD pedal and the other for the lows that is more of a clean track. I thought the bass was actually kinda loud.

It's lacking punch a bit. The drums need some processing. Bass could be a little louder, guitars are a bit too thick for my taste but that's up to you.
Fix the drums and put a multiband compressor + tape saturation on the master bus (Ferric is a great free VST for tape saturation).

    I like your song!
Maybe drums too low, and solo track too high (volume).
Also try to cut a little bit low freq.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree about it lacking punch. When you say guitars are a bit too thick, how would I go by changing that? Cutting out some lows? Or is it just my tone? I'll definitely try your suggestions with the drums. Drums are brand new to me, so I'm really lost when it comes to mixing them.

Thanks man, I appreciate it! When you say cut a bit of low frequencies, do you mean for the whole song (master track) or a specific track?

You could cut some lower mids ,probably around 200-400 Hz, and add some harshness at 1-2 kHz. Try it with a parametric EQ rather than a graphic one, just for learning purposes. I assume you use your AX8 for guitar sounds? In that case it would be easier to simply go through some cab/mic options to find something that suits the mix before you start fiddling with the EQ. an SM57 relatively close to the center of the cone should do the trick with either cabinet though.

Drums are quite a beast if you're new to audio engineering because every part of the drumkit needs to be treated like a separate instrument. Start out with a band/recording you like the drum sound of. Browse through your samples until you find somethign that sounds somewhat close and start from there. Make a sub-track for each instrument so you can edit each of them on their own but use the parent-track to glue it together via compression and saturation again. Always use a reference track at least to combat ear fatigue.

Tip of the day: Always use EQ cuts before compression, otherwise the frequencies you don#t want will influence the frequencies you actually want.

Thank you for this! This is all SUPER helpful. Sadly I can't change the IR now without rerecording the whole thing, but I'll try recording the same riff over and over with different IRs to test it.
