I have the 2nd gen scarlett 2i4 and it works fine for me. Never had an issue with it crashing or anything. If stuff starts clipping I just turn down the gain/use the built in pad. Worst case I also have a Radial DI box hooked up to pad the signal even further if need be.
With your budget you could find better options, I bought the 2i4 because I wasn't looking to spend a ton of money at the time.

    Looks reasonable to me.

If you aren't going to use UAD exclusive plugins, you can just get the cheapest interface with the least onboard processing.

    You're right about the Apogee.

Shame you don't use a Mac. All this ASIO nonsense can be avoided :p

One little benefit of the Duet is that it is also an amazing headphone amp

Yeah, I would really like to be able to use a MAC and Thunderbolt instead of PC and USB.

Since the Duet and the RME Babyface are in the same price range (although the babyface has onboard processing), I'm kind of stuck at Duet vs Babyface at the moment.

Since my new MAC has thunderbolt ports, I'm thinking of going with the
Focusrite Clarett 2Pre. Any opinions from users ? Thanks
